Bottom line: random play dance is a free K-pop dance circle where anyone who knows a song’s chorus jumps in; in Seoul the best-known spot is Hongdae’s R2 busking street, and only organisers announce dates, so check their posts the week you travel.

What this guide covers
What Is Random Play Dance?
Random play dance (랜덤플레이댄스, shortened to 랜플댄 or RPD) is a participatory K-pop game. An organiser plays short sections of songs, usually the chorus with the best-known “point” choreography, in an order nobody knows in advance. When a song you know starts, you run into the middle and dance it with everyone else who knows it. When the music cuts, you step back.
There is no stage and no audition; most people watch and jump in for the songs they know. In a 2024 Forbes Korea interview, the host of the Dancing Gomdol random dance channel said most participants are teenagers, often with friends or parents.
It also appears at public festivals: the Chosun Ilbo’s English edition reported foreign participants at a K-pop random play dance at Gwanghwamun Square on 29 August 2026. On an ordinary weekend, though, Hongdae is the place to look.
1. Where Random Play Dance Happens in Hongdae
Hongdae is the student and indie-music district around Hongik University in Mapo-gu, and VisitKorea says its streets are “filled with buskers and dance performances”. The centre is the pedestrian strip Mapo-gu calls Hongdae Red Road R2, better known as 걷고싶은거리, the “Street You Want to Walk”.

Visit Seoul puts R2 about 170 m from Hongik University Station Exit 8 (Line 2, Gyeongui-Jungang Line and AREX); Exit 9 is just as close. Mapo-gu’s notice lists four busking zones: zones 1, 2 and 4 take amplified acts such as vocals and dance, and zone 3 is for quiet acts like magic and mime. A session with a speaker belongs in zone 1, 2 or 4.

Organisers also use venues. FN Today reported a Dancing Gomdol session at KT&G Sangsangmadang in Hongdae, and the team’s October 2026 posters include a 4 October session at the 2026 Gangnam Festival. Hongdae on a weekend is the best bet, not a guarantee.

2. The Hongdae Busking Rules Behind Every Random Play Dance
Mapo-gu Office runs Hongdae’s street performance. Its 31 August 2026 notice abolished busker pre-registration: anyone who follows the rules can apply, and slots are drawn by monthly lottery. Applications for the next month run from the 10th to the 16th, with the draw around the 20th and a second round for leftover slots on the 25th to 27th. Each applicant can win up to six slots a month, four on weekdays and two at weekends.
Some older pages still mention “a prior registration system”. Mapo-gu operates the zones and wrote the new rules, so follow Mapo-gu.

The key rules at a glance
| Rule | What Mapo-gu says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Booked zone only; zones 1, 2 and 4 allow amplified dance | A proper session has a fixed spot and stays off the road. |
| When | Two-hour slots; nothing after 22:00 | Sessions stop by 10 pm. |
| Slot length | 1 hour 50 minutes plus 10 minutes to pack up | About two hours per zone. |
| Sound | Up to two amps, 60 dB limit | Stand close enough to hear the cue. |
| Lighting | Performer-installed lights banned | Evening sessions rely on street light. |
| Crowd | Keep shop entrances and walkways clear | If asked to move back, do it. |
| Who can book | Anyone who follows the rules, by monthly lottery on Mapo-gu’s Korean site | You cannot just turn up and perform. |
3. How to Find the Next Random Play Dance in Seoul
There is no official calendar, so check these the week you travel:
- The organiser’s posts. Dancing Gomdol (춤추는곰돌) posts weekly schedule posters with Korean and English captions on Instagram at @afstarz_official and films sessions for its YouTube channel. Check a week ahead and again on the day.
- Mapo-gu’s busking schedule. The Hongdae outdoor performance schedule (홍대, 야외공연 일정표) lists every booked slot by zone, date, time, genre and team. Look for 댄스 (dance); it does not say whether a team will run covers, a showcase or a random play dance.
- Hashtags. Search #랜덤플레이댄스, #랜플댄 and #randomplaydance on Instagram, TikTok and X, sorted by recent posts.
- Festival programmes. Check the event’s official page; some festival sessions need registration.

No time to plan? Walk the R2 street on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and listen for the speaker. It is outdoors, so on rainy days check the organiser’s account first.
4. How to Join a Random Play Dance Circle
- Watch two or three songs first to see where people enter.
- Step in only when your song starts, and step out the moment it cuts.
- Take a spot at the edge, not in front of someone mid-routine.
- Do not film yourself inside the circle; it blocks people behind you.
- During a guest, solo or challenge segment, wait until the host opens the floor.
- Keep bags, drinks and strollers outside the circle.
These are courtesies, not written rules; the host’s instructions come first.
5. Songs and Skill Level
The organiser picks the playlist and it changes constantly, so no setlist is promised; expect recent releases mixed with older hits. You only need the chorus. Pick three to five songs, learn each chorus from a mirrored dance practice video, and repeat until you do not need your phone.
Skill levels range from children to cover-dance crews, and nobody is marking you.
6. Filming Etiquette and Privacy
Random play dance runs on cameras: hosts film for their channels and spectators post clips to TikTok. Assume anything you do in the circle may go online.
- Rather not be posted? Watch from the back and stay out of the circle.
- Filming the whole circle is normal; close-ups of a child or a stranger are not. Ask first.
- Keep tripods and selfie sticks out of the walkway.
- If you post, credit the host, and remove a clip if someone in it asks.
7. Crowd Safety
A popular session packs several rows deep on a shopping street. Mapo-gu makes performers keep entrances and walkways clear, so cooperate when the host moves the crowd back.
- Stand where you have a way out, not against a wall or between parked scooters.
- If the crowd starts pushing, move out sideways.
- Agree a meeting point, such as Exit 9, and keep children at the front edge with an adult.
- Emergencies: 112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. The 1330 Korea Travel Helpline helps tourists in English and other languages.
8. K-pop Dance Classes: The Bookable Alternative
A K-pop dance class fixes the date, teaches a full chorus step by step and usually films a video. The classes below are listed on GetYourGuide, KKday and Creatrip as of 6 October 2026.

Closest to the busking street are ANA DANCE’s K-pop dance class in Hongdae (5.0 from 82 reviews, from ₩73,814) and the Real K-Pop Dance studio at 42 Yanghwa-ro 11-gil near Hapjeong Station, sold on KKday (4.7 from 114 reviews, ₩70,000) and Creatrip (4.9 from 173 reviews, 41.02 USD).
