Bottom line: the south korea visa for Sri Lankans is a real visa, not a visa-free entry: Sri Lankan passport holders apply for a tourist (C-3-9) visa through the Embassy of Korea in Colombo and, since 21 August 2026, book an appointment at the new VFS Korea Visa Application Centre; the visa fee is USD 40, paid in Sri Lankan rupees, and the embassy warns that screening can exceed 14 working days.

What this guide covers
South Korea Visa for Sri Lankans: Do You Need One?
Yes. The K-ETA eligible list covers only the passports that can enter Korea visa-free, and Sri Lanka is not on it. That means a Korean visa, not a K-ETA, for any visit: tourism, seeing family, a conference or a business meeting.

The embassy adds a warning worth repeating: a visa does not guarantee entry, and immigration officers at the airport can still refuse it.
1. Which Visa a Sri Lankan Tourist Applies For
The Colombo embassy publishes separate requirement lists by visa type. Two matter for most visitors: Tourism (C-3-9) and Event, Conference, Seminar, Meeting with Family or Friends (C-3-1, within 90 days). A short business trip is C-3-4. All C-category visas are for short visits; the embassy notes that C visa holders cannot change their status of stay after entering Korea.
If you are invited by family or a friend in Korea, ask which route they recommend: the C-3-1 list asks for the host’s documents, while the C-3-9 list is built around your own funds. Either way the application is yours, so prepare as if the officer will read every page.
2. How to Apply: Embassy Rules and the New Colombo VFS Centre
On 21 August 2026 VFS Global opened the Korea Visa Application Center in Colombo, in cooperation with the embassy. Booking an appointment is mandatory, and the centre’s role is to collect your form and documents, enrol biometrics and pass the file on; the Embassy of Korea in Sri Lanka alone decides whether to issue the visa. VFS lists business hours of 8 AM to 4 PM, submission 8 AM to 3 PM and passport collection 10 AM to 4 PM. Use only the official booking site, visaforkorea-sl.com.
The embassy’s own visa issuance guide still lists embassy counter hours (submission 09:00 to 11:00, passport collection 14:30 to 16:00) and the address No. 98 Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 7. Where the two differ, follow the VFS appointment confirmation, because VFS is the operator receiving applications since the launch. The VFS release gives its address as 2nd Floor, No. 657, Dr. Danister de Silva Mawatha, Colombo 9; use the address on your confirmation email.

| Passport validity | More than 6 months |
| Collect passport | In person, or with an authorisation letter signed like the passport |
3. Documents the Embassy Checks
The embassy’s C-3-9 tourism checklist asks for the following. All certified documents should be valid within 3 months of the application date, and missing items can lead to rejection.
- A completed visa application form, with a passport-size photograph taken within the last 6 months, glued to the form.
- Your original passport (valid more than 6 months) and previous passports, plus a copy of the biographic data page.
- A copy of Korean and OECD-country immigration records (visa pages), if applicable.
- A photocopy of both sides of your National ID card and your birth certificate with an English translation.
- A letter explaining the purpose of your visit (within 3 pages) and an itinerary or tour plan.
- An employer’s letter with the official seal, if applicable.
- Your personal bank account statement with a bank manager’s balance confirmation letter: originals, covering the last 3 months, issued within 14 days. If you use a parent’s statements, add a letter from the parent with their ID card.
Documents must be on A4 paper and not stapled, and the embassy states that any notarised invitation or guarantee letter from a host in Korea must be submitted by the applicant in person, not sent by courier from Korea.
4. Fee, Processing Time and Multiple-Entry Visas
The checklist gives the fee as USD 40, and says only the USD equivalent in Sri Lankan rupees can be accepted. The embassy tells applicants to bring the exact fee shown on the form. Fees are not refunded if a visa is refused, per the Korea Visa Portal. The Portal’s base table is USD 40 for a single entry up to 90 days, USD 60 above 90 days, USD 70 for double and USD 90 for multiple entry.
Processing is the real constraint. The embassy’s guide says a minimum of 15 working days, and a notice dated 1 January 2026 says screening may take more than 14 working days because of a large increase in applications; the embassy then calls applicants individually to collect passports. It has no express system. Apply well before you book non-refundable flights or hotels.
Sri Lanka is on the embassy’s list of countries that can receive a multiple-entry C-3 visa, but only under conditions. A visa valid for 1 to 5 years with a maximum stay of 30 days is available to applicants who have visited Korea at least once with a valid visa, hold more than USD 200,000 in personal assets, work as a full-time employee of a company with more than USD 1 million of investment in Korea for at least 3 years, or are 65 or older (a spouse may be included). The embassy adds that a single-entry visa may be issued even if you apply for multiple.
5. After the Visa: e-Arrival Card, Transit Rule and Entry Day
Print your Visa Grant Notice from visa.go.kr and carry it with your passport. Before you fly, check the Navigator on e-arrivalcard.go.kr: the e-Arrival Card is free, filed within 3 days before arrival, and is not needed only if you hold an approved K-ETA or are a resident.
One rule surprises travellers connecting through Seoul. The 30-day visa-free transit programme (B-2) excludes some nationalities, and the Embassy of Korea in Canada’s page lists Sri Lanka among them. Even if you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or European visa, a Sri Lankan passport needs a Korean visa to leave the airport.
On entry day, carry the Visa Grant Notice, your return ticket, hotel booking and a copy of your itinerary and bank statement. Answer questions directly and keep your documents consistent with what you submitted.
6. Flights, Rupees, Plugs and Packing
Trip.com’s October 2026 schedule data lists a nonstop SriLankan Airlines flight, UL471, shared with Korean Air as KE5471, a few days a week, and one-stop options through Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City; confirm days and fares on the airline sites. Seoul is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Sri Lanka. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the visa is approved; a reservation is enough for the application.

Korea uses the won. Rupees are not a currency you can count on exchanging in Seoul: exchange counters publish what they accept, so carry US dollars or a foreign-currency card as backup; see how much cash to bring to Korea.
Power: Korea is 220V at 60Hz with Type C and F sockets (plug and voltage guide). Sri Lanka runs on 230V, so voltage matches closely, but the Type D, M or G plugs used there need an adapter. Pack for cold if you travel between December and February; see best time to visit Korea and the packing list.
What Changes After 31 December 2026?
The K-ETA exemption that ends on 31 December 2026 does not apply to Sri Lankan passports, because you need a visa. The visa fees, hours and processing times above are the ones published in October 2026; the embassy and VFS pages show current changes. If the K-ETA rules for other countries change from 1 January 2027, they will be posted on k-eta.go.kr; see our K-ETA exempt countries guide.
Mistakes to Avoid With the South Korea Visa for Sri Lankans
- Using unofficial agents or sites: book only through visaforkorea-sl.com and apply on visa.go.kr; the Korean missions warn about fake portals.
- Booking non-refundable flights first: screening takes more than 14 working days.
- Old bank statements: the embassy wants originals for the last 3 months, issued within 14 days.
- Stapling documents: the embassy asks for A4 paper, not stapled.
- Paying in the wrong currency: the fee is accepted in Sri Lankan rupees, at the exact amount on the form.
- Assuming a transit visa-free stay: Sri Lankan nationals are excluded from the B-2 programme.
- Applying for a multiple-entry visa without meeting the criteria: you may get a single-entry visa and the fee is not refunded.
