Bottom line: where to stay in Seoul comes down to three things: the airport link, the subway line and your budget, so first-timers are best in Hongdae (direct AREX train from the airport), Myeongdong or Insadong, while Gangnam, Yeouido and Jamsil suit business trips, river views and families.

Most lists of where to stay in Seoul rank neighbourhoods by vibe and never mention how you will actually get there at 23:00 with a suitcase. This guide compares ten areas by the facts that decide your trip: the airport bus or train that reaches each one, its fare, the nearest subway line and whether a late arrival works.
Airport details follow the operators’ own pages; hotel prices are third-party estimates and labelled that way. Last checked 15 October 2026.
Quick answer
- Easiest from the airport: Hongdae, because the AREX all-stop train runs straight to Hongik Univ. Station for ₩4,650 from Terminal 1 with no transfer.
- Most central for sightseeing: Myeongdong or Insadong; bus 6015 stops at Myeongdong hotels and bus 6011 stops at Anguk Station for Insadong, both ₩17,000.
- Best for late arrivals: Dongdaemun, Hongdae, Gangnam or Seoul Station, which all have night buses; Itaewon and Yeouido have none.
- Cheapest areas: a third-party guide dated August 2026 lists Hongdae, Insadong and wider Jongno as the lowest-priced areas.
- Families and theme parks: Jamsil, next to Lotte World and Seokchon Lake.
- Trendy cafes and shopping: Seongsu, though no airport bus stops there.
- Rule of thumb for where to stay in Seoul: pick the area for your first three days, then stay put; moving hotels costs a day.

What this guide covers
What Is the Best Area for Where to Stay in Seoul?
There is no single best area for where to stay in Seoul, but there is a best area for you. Seoul is a spread-out city with nine core subway lines, and a long day of sightseeing usually crosses three or four neighbourhoods. So the choice of where to stay in Seoul matters less for distance than for three practical details: how far your hotel is from the Incheon Airport route you will use, which subway line is outside the door, and how much you want to pay.
For a first visit I would choose Hongdae for easy arrival and nightlife, Myeongdong or Insadong for the shortest walks to sights, and Gangnam only if your business or shopping plans are there. Read Myeongdong is not Seoul before you book anything in the tourist core.
1. How to Choose Where to Stay in Seoul
- Airport link. The AREX all-stop train from Incheon costs ₩4,750 to Seoul Station and reaches Hongik Univ. for ₩4,650 from Terminal 1; airport buses cost ₩17,000 to ₩18,000 and stop at hotels in most areas. The last all-stop train that reaches Seoul Station leaves Terminal 1 at 23:38 (Terminal 2: 23:32), per the operator timetable. See every airport option.
- Subway line. Line 2, the circle line, links Hongdae, Gangnam, Seongsu, Jamsil and Dongdaemun; Line 3 reaches Anguk for Insadong and Changdeokgung; Line 4 serves Myeongdong; Line 6 serves Itaewon; Lines 5 and 9 serve Yeouido.
- Budget. Seoul’s average hotel night was US$89.9 in a third-party report from April 2026; guesthouse beds start around US$20. See Korea trip cost.

2. Where to Stay in Seoul: The 10 Areas Compared
Myeongdong: central, busy and good for a first night
Myeongdong is the shopping and street-food district in the middle of the city. Bus 6015 (₩17,000) stops at Myeongdong hotels, and Line 4 runs through Myeongdong Station. It is the most tourist-heavy area and rooms are not the cheapest, but you can walk to Namdaemun and Euljiro. Details: Incheon Airport to Myeongdong.

Hotel pick for Myeongdong: voco Seoul Myeongdong by IHG, 100 m from Hoehyeon Station.
Hongdae: the easiest arrival and the best nightlife
Hongdae is the university district west of the centre, known for clubs, live music and cheap guesthouses. The AREX all-stop train goes straight to Hongik Univ. Station, ₩4,650 from Terminal 1 and ₩5,250 from Terminal 2, with no transfer; do not board the nonstop Express because it never stops there. A third-party hotel guide lists Hongdae among the cheapest areas. See Incheon Airport to Hongdae and Seoul nightlife.

Hotel picks in Hongdae: L7 HONGDAE by LOTTE HOTELS (237 m from Hongik Univ. Station) and Holiday Inn Express Seoul Hongdae by IHG (311 m).
Gangnam: business hotels and upscale shopping
Gangnam is the business and luxury district south of the Han River. Bus 6009 (₩17,000) stops at Sinsa, Nonhyeon and the Gangnam Station area, while rail means AREX to Gimpo Airport and then Line 9. It is far from the palaces, which adds subway time on sightseeing days. Details: Incheon Airport to Gangnam.
Hotel picks in Gangnam: Ocloud Hotel Gangnam (122 m from Sinnonhyeon Station) and Toyoko Inn Seoul Gangnam (707 m from Gangnam Station).
Insadong and Jongno: palaces and traditional Seoul
Insadong sits beside the palaces. Bus 6011 (₩17,000) drops you at Anguk Station between Exits 5 and 6, and Changdeokgung is a five-minute walk from Anguk Station Exit 3 according to the palace’s own page. Jongno 3-ga hotels use bus 6002. The area is quiet at night. See Incheon Airport to Insadong and Insadong.

A walkable Insadong hotel is N285 Hotel Insadong, about 300 m from Insadong.
Itaewon: international dining, with one airport bus
Itaewon is Seoul’s international quarter on Line 6. The only airport bus that stops there is KAL 6702 (₩18,000), roughly every 35 to 45 minutes, and no night bus stops in Itaewon, so a late arrival means a taxi from Seoul Station. Muslim travellers often base here for the mosque; see Muslim-friendly hotels in Seoul. Details: Incheon Airport to Itaewon.

Hotel picks in Itaewon: Hamilton Hotel Itaewon (68 m from Itaewon Station) and Mondrian Seoul Itaewon (689 m).
Seongsu: cafes and design shops, no airport bus
Seongsu is the converted-factory district on Line 2 east of the centre. No airport bus stops in Seongsu itself; the practical route is the AREX all-stop train to Hongik Univ. and 15 stops on Line 2, about ₩6,200 to ₩6,800 in total. Nearest buses are 6705A (Gangbyeon, ₩18,000) and 6010 (Wangsimni, ₩17,000). See Incheon Airport to Seongsu and Seongsu shopping.

Hotel picks in Seongsu: Hotel Poco Seongsu (141 m from Seongsu Station) and Parus Cella Seongsu (537 m).
Dongdaemun: night shopping and a night bus
Dongdaemun is built around the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and late-night wholesale shopping. Bus 6001 (₩17,000) stops at DDP and Dongdaemun hotels, and night bus N6701 (₩18,000) goes straight to DDP, which makes this a smart choice for a very late landing. See Incheon Airport to Dongdaemun.

Hotel picks in Dongdaemun: Toyoko Inn Seoul Dongdaemun 2 (171 m from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station) and SEOUL N HOTEL Dongdaemun (342 m from Dongmyo Station).

Seoul Station: trains, early flights and one-ride airport access
Seoul Station is where KTX trains to Busan start and where the AREX Express ends. The Express takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 for ₩13,000 as a reserved-seat ticket; the all-stop train is ₩4,750 and about an hour. It is practical for an early train or a dawn flight, less so for atmosphere. Full options: Incheon Airport to Seoul and KTX backup routes.
Hotel picks at Seoul Station: About Stay Seoul Station and Four Points by Sheraton Josun Seoul Station, both about 300 m from the station.
Yeouido: river views, offices and cherry blossom
Yeouido is an island business district with Han River parks and Seoul’s best known cherry blossom street. Bus 6007 (₩17,000) stops at IFC Mall (Conrad Seoul), Yeouinaru and the National Assembly, but its first departures are 06:59 from Terminal 1 and no night bus serves it. See Incheon Airport to Yeouido, Han River parks and cherry blossom Korea 2027.

A Yeouido hotel connected to IFC Mall is Conrad Seoul, 407 m from Yeouido Station.
Jamsil: families, Lotte World and the lake
Jamsil has Lotte World, Lotte World Tower and Seokchon Lake, plus Line 2. Bus 6200 (₩17,000) runs non-stop to Jamsil Station and Lotte World, and night bus N6703 (₩18,000) takes about 70 minutes from Terminal 1. The subway from Jamsil to the old centre is long. See Incheon Airport to Jamsil and Everland vs Lotte World.

Hotel picks in Jamsil: Signiel Seoul (235 m from Jamsil Station) and Sofitel Ambassador Seoul Hotel & Serviced Residences (513 m).
3. Where to Stay in Seoul by Type of Traveller
- First trip, 3 to 5 days: Hongdae, Myeongdong or Insadong.
- Budget: Hongdae, Insadong or Jongno, per a third-party guide from August 2026; a jjimjilbang can be a cheap night but is not a hotel replacement.
- Nightlife: Hongdae and Itaewon.
- Shopping: Myeongdong, Dongdaemun and Seongsu.
- Families: Jamsil, beside Lotte World and Seokchon Lake.
- Late arrival or early departure: Dongdaemun, Hongdae, Gangnam or Seoul Station.
- Business: Gangnam or Yeouido.
4. Where to Stay in Seoul: Hotel Prices and Booking Tips
Korea has no official nightly rate table, so the ranges below come from two third-party sources. Yanolja Research reported an average Seoul hotel night of US$89.9 in April 2026. ShopBack’s August 2026 guide gives US$20 to US$40 for a guesthouse bed, US$50 to US$90 for a budget hotel and US$100 to US$180 for mid-range, and names April (cherry blossom) and October (autumn foliage) as the priciest weeks.
Book a cancellable room, check which exit and line the hotel is nearest, and avoid places that look cheap because they are a long walk from a station. For a love motel see the motel booking trap. The hotel cards in this guide are affiliate links to Agoda; if you book through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Compare prices on the site you trust.
One last check before you book: match the area to your landing time. If you arrive after 23:00, the last all-stop AREX train that reaches Hongik Univ. or Seoul Station leaves Terminal 1 at 23:38 and Terminal 2 at 23:32; the later 23:56 and 23:50 trains end at Digital Media City. That is why Dongdaemun, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seoul Station, which all have night buses, are the safest bets for a midnight landing.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing where to stay in Seoul by fame: booking Myeongdong because it is famous without checking that bus 6015 or Line 4 suits your plans.
- Boarding the AREX Express for Hongdae; it does not stop at Hongik Univ.
- Choosing Itaewon or Yeouido for a very late arrival; no night bus stops in either.
- Picking Seongsu and assuming there is an airport bus; there is none.
- Booking a hotel a long walk from a station to save ₩20,000.
- Changing hotels every night; each move costs half a day.
