1. Where the Gangnam Girl Meme Came From
The meme has two layers: an old stereotype and a new character. Gangnam has long been shorthand for new money. The Korean Culture Center’s webzine says Koreans widely regard Gangnam as the country’s most affluent district, comparable to Beverly Hills, and the Korea Herald wrote in 2012 that Psy’s “Gangnam Style” carried social commentary about the newly rich and the district where many of them live, a mix of desire, envy and bitterness.
The character is much newer. Harper’s Bazaar Singapore (10 October 2025) credits a Korean-Australian content creator with inventing it and puts her at about 540,000 followers, and Preview.ph profiled her on 25 July 2025. Who first used “Gangnam girl” as a label is not documented.
The link to the Hongdae guy is explicit. In a TikTok skit titled “hongdae boy vs gangnam girl | black card”, the Hongdae boy brags that he has a black card and the Gangnam girl answers that it looks like a bus card. An Instagram Reel dated 14 June 2025, captioned “No open minded… open wallet??”, tags the Hongdae guy creator, so the pairing was public by mid-June 2025. Harper’s says she “matches ‘Hongdae Guy’ in cultural force”.
2. Why Gangnam? The District Behind the Stereotype
Gangnam literally means “south of the Han River”. The Korean Culture Center says the greater Gangnam area covers three districts south of the river, Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu and Songpa-gu, and that before the 1960s much of it was rice fields. The same article calls Gangnam the city’s commercial heart and leading trendsetter.
The Korea Herald (December 2023) calls Gangnam an affluent area in southern Seoul that leads in fashion and trends, and notes an irony: only two scenes of the “Gangnam Style” video were shot in Gangnam-gu. The meme borrows the district’s reputation, but Gangnam itself is an everyday business, shopping and residential area.

The two characters are mirror images: the Hongdae guy has scripted lines for foreign women, the Gangnam girl a high bar for anyone who approaches her. Both exaggerate for laughs and neither is an official term. The Hongdae guy stereotype is not tied to one postcode either: Yonhap’s September 2025 report framed the controversy as Korean men harassing foreign women in Hongdae and Gangnam, and a Korea Herald interviewee said the type exists “not only in Hongdae”.

Start with Garosu-gil, VisitKorea’s ginkgo tree-lined street of coffee shops and designer stores that runs from Sinsa Station. Visit Seoul adds that it is a good walking area.
From there, Apgujeong Rodeo Street and Cheongdam Fashion Street are the luxury stretch. VisitKorea lists Rodeo Street as open 24 hours and free, and Visit Seoul says Cheongdam is lined with major luxury brands and a cluster of beauty and hair salons. Visit Seoul puts subway hours at about 05:30 to midnight, varying by station. Gangnam sits on Line 2 and the Sinbundang Line, so check the last train for your line and direction in Naver Map. Seoul’s late-night owl buses carry an N before the route number and run from 00:00 to 04:00 at ₩2,500 (adult, as of Oct 2026).
