What Is Halloween in Seoul Like in 2026?

Halloween in Seoul is a night-out holiday rather than a family trick-or-treat tradition. Locals and visitors dress up, fill the bars and clubs of Hongdae and Itaewon, and queue for the theme parks’ horror seasons, which run for weeks.

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and the city has treated Halloween weekend as a public-safety period since the 2022 Itaewon tragedy. If you want the costumes without the crush, the parks and ticketed venues below are the easier route. For the wider picture, see our Seoul nightlife guide.

2. Hongdae and Itaewon: Halloween in Seoul After Dark

Hongdae is the easiest place to find a costume crowd: clubs, pubs and street performers around Hongik University, with people in costume on the main streets from the evening. Seoul’s 2025 Halloween plan named Hongdae one of eight priority areas, with a joint control room, more than 200 guide fences to keep people walking on the right, 616 safety staff and crowd-level boards along the Red Road. Expect similar measures this year. Our Hongdae guy and Itaewon guy guide covers club ID checks and getting home after the last train.

Itaewon is Seoul’s most international party district, with English-speaking bars and a mixed-age crowd. It is also where the safety rules are tightest. For a ticketed party with a fixed capacity, Comicalloween runs on Saturday 31 October from 21:00 to 05:00 across two Itaewon venues, with a costume contest at 23:30 for film and TV characters. It is for guests aged 19 and over.

3. Itaewon, the 2022 Tragedy and Staying Safe in 2026

On 29 October 2022, a crowd crush in a narrow Itaewon alley during Halloween celebrations killed 159 people, according to Yonhap News Agency. Bereaved families and citizens marked the fourth anniversary on 17 October 2026 with a march in Seoul. Visit the area with that in mind: keep your voice down near Itaewon Station Exit 1, where a memorial for the victims stands, and skip costume photos there.

Yongsan District, which administers Itaewon, announced its Halloween plan on 19 October 2026. It runs from 23 October to 1 November, with about 2,550 staff from the district office, police, fire service and other agencies. A joint control room opens near World Food Street, and officials expect about 165,000 visitors to World Food Street and Quinon-gil over the period. The district rates crowding on a four-level scale using intelligent CCTV, a real-time map and the number of people leaving Itaewon Station, and it brings a disaster command bus to the street from Friday 30 October. Seoul’s 2025 plan also allowed trains to pass Itaewon Station without stopping at the “very crowded” level, so treat a skipped stop as possible.

Crowd rules that work anywhere in Seoul

  • Arrive early. Make the early evening your main window and treat late night as optional.
  • Walk with the flow. Seoul’s own guidance is to keep to the right and follow the guide fences and staff directions.
  • Pick a backup station. If Itaewon is very crowded, use the neighbouring stops on Line 6, Noksapyeong or Hangangjin, and check the Seoul subway guide for last trains.
  • Agree a meeting point. Keep your phone charged and a data plan active in case your group splits.
  • Leave if it feels too tight. No party is worth a dense crowd; step into a side street or shop.
  • Know the numbers. Call 112 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance; 1330 is the Korea travel helpline with English support. See Korea emergency numbers.

4. Theme Parks: Everland, Lotte World and Seoul Land

The parks are the most relaxed way to enjoy Halloween in Seoul because entry is ticketed and the festivals last for weeks. Our Everland vs Lotte World guide compares rides and ticket types.

Everland: Blood City Zero

Everland in Yongin is the home of the country’s best-known Halloween horror event. Blood City Zero, subtitled Hell Gate, runs from 12 September to 22 November 2026, and Samsung C&T’s newsroom describes it as an immersive experience in which visitors play survivors of a zombie city. The autumn season also adds a pumpkin parade, a night parade and a drone, laser and fireworks show. Tickets are on KKday, and the Everland shuttle bus leaves from near Hongdae, Myeongdong and Dongdaemun.

Seoul Land in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, is the budget option. Its K-Dopamine Ghost Festival mixes Korean ghosts with Western Halloween characters, and the official event page lists a ghost prank-call booth, a K-pop random play dance and a ghost photo time. The festival is announced for 5 September to 1 November. The pass covers entry and rides only; extras such as the ghost cave cost ₩9,000 each.

5. Costumes, Props and What to Wear

Late October nights in Seoul are cool, so wear a coat over a thin costume and shoes you can walk in. Our best time to visit Korea guide has typical autumn temperatures.

  • Keep your face visible for ID checks. Clubs and bars commonly check ID at the door, so carry your passport and choose a mask you can lift.
  • Leave realistic props at home. Toy weapons can alarm staff and police in a crowd; choose soft, obviously fake accessories.
  • Check each venue’s dress code. Parks, clubs and parties set their own rules on masks, props and face paint.
  • Buy cheap accessories locally. Headbands and face paint are easy to find at discount stores such as Daiso; see our Daiso Korea guide.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving in Itaewon after 22:00 on Friday or Saturday without a backup station or a meeting point.
  • Forgetting your passport; venues commonly check ID and a phone photo may not be accepted.
  • Assuming the parks run only on 31 October; the festivals last for weeks and weekdays are calmer.
  • Booking a park ticket without checking cancellation terms; some are non-cancellable.
  • Leaving drinks unattended or accepting a drink from a stranger.
