Kimbap Seoul: The Short Answer

  • Kimbap is steamed rice and fillings rolled in laver and sliced. KTO lists pickled radish, egg strips, fish cake, carrots and spinach. It is a roll, not raw-fish sushi.
  • Spelling: KTO and Visit Seoul write gimbap, many menus and booking sites write kimbap. Same dish, 김밥.
  • Kimbap Seoul price: ₩3,923 per roll on average in Seoul, August 2026 (Chamgagyeok, provisional), up ₩300 on a year earlier.
  • Kimbap Seoul types: classic, Chungmu (rice-only), mayak (bite-size, Gwangjang), tuna-mayo, cheese, vegetable and premium chain rolls.
  • Where to find kimbap Seoul style: bunsik shops, convenience-store triangles (our convenience store guide) and Gwangjang Market.
  • Verified places: Mother and Daughter’s Gimbap (Visit Seoul), Gimgane (official English menu), Robot Gimbap at Incheon T2 (airport.kr).

What Is Kimbap? The Dish Behind Kimbap Seoul Menus

Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) describes kimbap as steamed rice, pickled radish, egg strips, fish cake, carrots and spinach rolled in laver. The rice can be plain or seasoned with salt, vinegar and sugar, and KTO says the seasoned version has a richer flavor. It adds that gimbap is a popular picnic meal or snack, and that kimchi and cheese versions are now common.

So why is it not sushi? The filling list has no raw fish, the roll is usually cooked or pickled ingredients, and shops finish it with sesame seeds or sesame oil. Think of kimbap Seoul style as a hand-held packed lunch rather than a delicate sushi course.

On spelling: KTO and Visit Seoul use gimbap, while GetYourGuide and many menus use kimbap. Search both, because the best kimbap in Seoul lists on one site may be filed under the other spelling. This guide uses kimbap, with gimbap in official names.

1. Kimbap Seoul Types: From Classic to Premium

Classic kimbap

The default roll is called just kimbap or gimbap. Expect the KTO fillings plus ham in many shops (KTO’s trends article also lists ham).

Chungmu kimbap

Chungmu kimbap is thin, rice-only rolls served with seasoned squid and radish kimchi on the side, a specialty of the port city Tongyeong (Wikimedia Commons description). It is a regional style, so look for “Chungmu gimbap” (충무김밥) on the sign rather than expecting it at every Seoul bunsik shop.

Mayak kimbap

Mayak (마약) kimbap are mini rolls made famous by Gwangjang Market. Visit Seoul says “mayak” means drugs in Korean and was added to the name because the rolls are addictive. We cover the market itself in our Gwangjang Market guide.

Tuna-mayo, cheese and other fillings

KTO’s vegetarian tips explain the naming rule: if a roll has a special ingredient, the name says so. Chamchi gimbap (참치김밥) has canned tuna, and cheese gimbap (치즈김밥) has cheese. Gimgane’s official English menu lists Tuna, Double Cheese, Spicy Anchovy, Beef, Egg Spam, Wasabi Crab Meat, Pork Cutlet Roll and Whole Shrimp Roll.

Premium rolls and vegetable kimbap

Airport.kr lists Robot Gimbap as a “premium kimbap and bunsik brand”. Hotel and premium kimbap prices vary widely, so check the menu. Plain vegetable kimbap (yachae gimbap) is the lightest option; check the diet section before assuming it is vegan.

2. Where to Buy Kimbap Seoul: Shops, Stores and Markets

Bunsik shops and chains

Bunsik means snack food, and the typical bunsik shop sells kimbap, tteokbokki, ramyeon and rice dishes. Gimgane is one chain with an official English menu page (gimgane.co.kr/en), headquartered in Songpa-gu. It lists ten items but no prices or ingredients, so check at the counter.

“Kimbap Cheonguk” (Kimbap Heaven) is a sign used by several separate operators, according to the community encyclopedia Namuwiki, which is not an official source. Treat each shop as its own business: menus and prices differ. Our tteokbokki guide covers the usual bunsik pairing.

Samgak-gimbap is the rice triangle in the chilled cabinet at CU, GS25 and 7-Eleven. Our Korea convenience store guide covers microwaves, payment with T-money and what else to buy. Triangle kimbap prices vary by brand, so check the shelf tag.

Visit Seoul lists Mother and Daughter’s Gimbap at 88 Changgyeonggung-ro, Jongno-gu, daily 09:00-21:00, about 99 m from Jongno 5(o)-ga Station Exit 8, phone +82-2-2273-8330. The listing names gimbap as the signature dish. It does not state closed days, English menus or card acceptance, so confirm on site. Gwangjang is crowded at lunch; for the cash question see how much cash to bring to Korea.

3. How to Order Kimbap in Seoul

  1. At kimbap Seoul shops, say “gimbap han jul juseyo” (김밥 한 줄 주세요), one roll please. Chamgagyeok prices kimbap per roll (줄).
  2. Say “pojang” (포장) for takeout. Many shops wrap rolls in foil for travel.
  3. Name the filling: chamchi (tuna), chijeu (cheese), yachae (vegetable). Point at the menu and ask whether it has ham, egg or crab-flavored meat.
  4. Some shops set minimums. KTO’s Jeju example, Oneunjeong Gimbap, is takeout only and starts at two rolls, so ask if one roll is fine.
  5. Menu boards are mostly Hangul. Save the Hangul names in this guide or use Naver Map to read the shop page.

4. What Kimbap Seoul Costs

The Korea Consumer Agency’s Chamgagyeok price survey tracks kimbap as one of eight restaurant dishes. The latest month published on 8 October 2026 was August 2026. Seoul averaged ₩3,923 per roll, provisional and sourced from Statistics Korea data. That is ₩300 (about 8%) above August 2025’s ₩3,623, and Seoul was the highest of the 16 regions in the table. The table shows no national average.

Chamgagyeok notes that survey shops change over time, so region-to-region comparisons are not exact. Filled rolls with cutlet or shrimp cost more than the plain average.

5. Kimbap Seoul Picnics, Han River and Airport Snacks

KTO calls gimbap a popular picnic meal, and the GetYourGuide class description tells students to take leftover kimbap to the Han River and spread out a mat. Buy two rolls, a drink and a mat, then see our Han River parks guide for where to sit. That guide also covers ramyeon cooked on the riverside.

Airport and flight tip. Airport.kr lists Robot Gimbap in Terminal 2 (3F, near Gate 257, 06:00-22:00) and Byulmi Bunsik in Terminal 1 (B1, 06:00-22:00). It also lists GS25 and CU stores open 24 hours in Terminal 2, where you can pick up triangles late. Check whether a shop is before or after security. Rolls with egg, ham or mayonnaise suffer in a warm bag, so ask your airline about food you carry home. For arrival logistics see Incheon Airport to Seoul.

6. Kimbap Seoul Dietary Notes: Egg, Ham, Fish Cake, Vegan

  • Egg and fish cake: both are on KTO’s standard filling list. Fish cake is a fish product.
  • Ham and crab-flavored meat: KTO’s vegetarian tips say even vegetable kimbap may contain ham, eggs and crab-flavored meat, depending on the restaurant.
  • Pork: Gimgane’s English menu includes Egg Spam and Pork Cutlet Roll. Ask at any shop if you avoid pork.
  • Vegan: KTO recommends basic yachae gimbap (carrot, burdock root, spinach, seasoned radish) and tells vegans to check with the restaurant. Kimbap chains do not publish a vegan certification, so ask for vegetable-only rolls.
  • Halal and allergies: Kimbap shops do not publish halal status. Seaweed, sesame, soy and fish cake are common, so ask.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling kimbap Seoul rolls sushi. Expect cooked or pickled fillings, not raw fish.
  • Assuming “vegetable” means vegan. KTO warns about ham, egg and crab-flavored meat.
  • Treating every “Kimbap Cheonguk” sign as one chain. Menus and prices differ by operator.
  • Treating the Chamgagyeok average as a fixed price. It is provisional, and market or airport prices may be higher.
  • Leaving egg, ham or mayo rolls in a warm bag all day. Eat them the same day.
  • Arriving at the airport shops after 22:00. Robot Gimbap and Byulmi Bunsik list 06:00-22:00; use a 24-hour convenience store instead.
  • Booking the Mangwon class for an afternoon and expecting the market tour. Per GetYourGuide it runs in mornings only.
