Bottom line: Dakgalbi Seoul means boneless chicken in a gochujang sauce stir-fried on a hot plate, a dish from Chuncheon that Seoul restaurants copy, and a Seoul menu checked at the source charges ₩14,000 to ₩16,000 per portion with a two-portion minimum, because Korea’s official price survey does not track dakgalbi.

Dakgalbi Seoul: The Short Answer
- Dakgalbi is boneless chicken marinated in a red chili paste (gochujang) sauce and stir-fried with cabbage, sweet potato, onion and rice cakes, according to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).
- Chuncheon in Gangwon-do is the birthplace. Seoul restaurants serve the Chuncheon style, so dakgalbi Seoul menus are copies, not a local Seoul dish.
- Types: classic iron-plate (cheolpan), charcoal-grilled (sutbul), soy sauce, cheese, and the brothy muldakgalbi.
- Finish with fried rice (bokkeumbap), the traditional last course. Noodles and extra rice cakes are add-ons.
- Minimum portions: Hongdae Dakgalbi’s own menu says two portions. Its site also says one diner may be possible when it is quiet.
- Dakgalbi Seoul price: official surveys do not track it. Hongdae Dakgalbi charges ₩14,000 to ₩16,000 per portion; KTO lists Chuncheon restaurants at ₩14,000 to ₩19,000 (February 2025).
- Areas: Hongdae, Sinchon and Jongno/Gwanghwamun. Diet: it is chicken with gochujang and often cheese, so not vegetarian; ask about halal.

What this guide covers
What Is Dakgalbi? The Chuncheon Dish Behind Dakgalbi Seoul Menus
Dakgalbi (닭갈비) literally means “chicken ribs”, but there are no ribs: KTO says galbi usually means bone-in grilled meat, and the word was borrowed for chicken. KTO calls Chuncheon the dish’s birthplace and epicentre.

KTO’s pages differ slightly on the origin. Its dakgalbi article says it began in 1970, when a pork galbi restaurant renamed itself “Dakbulgogijip” during a pork shortage and charcoal-grilled marinated chicken. Its page on the Chuncheon alley says the 1960s, with the street growing in the 1970s and 1980s. For a broader grill primer, see Korean BBQ for first-timers.
1. Types of Dakgalbi You Will See on Dakgalbi Seoul Menus
Classic iron-plate (cheolpan) dakgalbi
KTO calls cheolpan dakgalbi the standard version: chicken in a gochujang-based sauce stir-fried on an iron plate with cabbage, sweet potatoes, onions and green onions. It suggests tasting it plain first, then wrapped in vegetable leaves.

Charcoal (sutbul) dakgalbi
KTO says Chuncheon has two types and locals call both “dakgalbi”. Sutbul dakgalbi is charcoal-grilled with a salt, soy sauce or gochujang marinade. Look for 숯불 (sutbul) on the menu if you want the grilled version.
Cheese dakgalbi
KTO describes cheese dakgalbi as the classic with mozzarella melted over it, eaten fondue-style by dipping chicken, vegetables and rice cakes; the cheese softens the heat. Hongdae Dakgalbi sells it as its signature “cheese fondue dakgalbi”.

Soy sauce, brothy and rice or noodle versions
Soy sauce (ganjang) dakgalbi is milder; KTO lists it as a kids’ dish at Woomi. Muldakgalbi, from Taebaek according to Wikipedia, cooks the chicken in broth. At the end, add noodles (sari) or order fried rice: KTO says bokkeumbap is stir-fried with the leftover sauce and is sometimes called “Korea’s official dessert”.

2. How to Order and Cook Dakgalbi in Seoul
Minimum portions
For dakgalbi Seoul portions, Hongdae Dakgalbi’s official menu says every price is per portion and “a minimum of two portions is required”. Elsewhere the same site says one portion is possible but may not be at busy times, so the operator’s own pages disagree. Solo travellers should ask first. The site also says groups of three or more can order one fewer portion than the headcount (three people, two portions). Other restaurants set their own minimums, so ask when you order.
Spice levels
Dakgalbi Seoul spice levels are not standardised, but Hongdae Dakgalbi offers four. Its own descriptions: mild is “still slightly spicy”, medium is “recommended for most visitors”, spicy is full red-pepper heat, and very spicy is for serious chili fans (have a sweet drink ready). It recommends the cheese version at the slightly spicy level, because the cheese cools the heat.
Who Cooks Your Dakgalbi Seoul Table?
It depends. Hongdae Dakgalbi’s site tells guests to adjust the gas heat and flip the chicken often themselves, with a call bell on the table. KTO says staff stir-fry the bokkeumbap when you order it.

Add-ons, side dishes and drinks
At Hongdae Dakgalbi, ramyeon or udon noodles (sari), rice cakes and sweet potato cost ₩2,000 each, extra cheese ₩4,000, and fried rice ₩2,000 to ₩3,000. Salad and banchan are self-service with free refills, and water refills are free. Drinks must be ordered from staff, not taken from the fridge. A free chive pancake comes while you wait. Pay at the counter.
3. What Dakgalbi Seoul Costs
The Korea Consumer Agency’s Chamgagyeok survey tracks eight dishes, and dakgalbi is not one of them, so prices below come from dated restaurant and tourism pages.

4. Where to Eat the Best Dakgalbi in Seoul (Verified Places)
The places below come from Visit Seoul, KTO and the restaurant’s own site. They are not ranked.
Hongdae Dakgalbi (Shin Migyeong), Hongdae
Visit Seoul lists this dakgalbi Seoul favourite at 31-10 Wausan-ro 21-gil, Mapo-gu, with Hongik University Station Exit 9 as the nearest exit. Its own site says open daily 11:00 to 22:30 (last order 21:40) and about 8 to 9 minutes on foot from Exit 9, while Visit Seoul says 22:40 and 21:50, so the operator’s hours win. It lists English and Chinese-speaking staff, a multilingual menu, and reservations recommended on busy evenings. Phone +82-2-2245-5222. Ask about foreign card acceptance. Arriving by AREX? See our airport to Hongdae guide.

Chuncheonjip Dakgalbi Makguksu, Sinchon
Visit Seoul describes boneless dakgalbi cooked on a big hot plate at the table, with macaroni salad and kimchi as sides. It lists 1 Yonsei-ro 5ga-gil, Seodaemun-gu, Sinchon Station (Line 2) Exit 1 (210 m), hours 11:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 22:30, closed Mondays, +82-507-1303-2361. Ask about an English menu and card payment.
Ildossi Dakgalbi, Gwanghwamun branch (Jongno area)
KTO’s Muslim-friendly restaurant guide (2022 edition) lists the Gwanghwamun branch at 136 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, +82-2-3789-9007, in its Jongno and Insadong map. That edition is old, so confirm it is still open and its halal status by phone. Check hours and prices before you go. Pair it with Insadong or Gwangjang Market.
5. The Dakgalbi Seoul Day Trip to Chuncheon
KTO names three dakgalbi zones in Chuncheon: Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street, the Namchuncheon Station intersection, and the commercial district next to Soyang Dam. Chuncheon’s city tourism portal lists the street at 2 Myeongdong-gil, always open to visitors, +82-33-250-3089. This Myeongdong is not the Seoul shopping district; see Myeongdong Is Not Seoul first.

KTO says the ITX-Cheongchun train runs from Yongsan Station to Chuncheon, at up to 180 km/h, and the GetYourGuide Chuncheon listing says Chuncheon Station is about one hour from Seoul by it. KTO’s Woomi and Wonjo entries put them about 1.2 km from Exit 1 of Chuncheon Station on the Gyeongchun Line. KTO says tickets are sold at ticket offices, on the KORAIL website, in the KORAIL+ app and at kiosks. Check the timetable and fare first. For a longer day out, our Nami Island and Petite France guide covers the nearby route.
6. Dakgalbi Seoul Dietary Notes: Chicken, Gochujang and Cheese
For dakgalbi Seoul diets, only official statements are quoted; the rest is marked “ask”.
- Meat: chicken. Hongdae Dakgalbi’s site says its chicken is domestic.
- Gochujang: a red chili paste. Soy and wheat are typical in Korean pastes, but restaurants rarely publish their recipes, so gluten-free and soy-free diners should ask.
- Cheese: mozzarella and cheddar at Hongdae Dakgalbi, so dairy.
- Sides and noodles: ramyeon, udon and makguksu add wheat or buckwheat. Ask about the banchan.
- Vegetarian: not suitable, as the dish is chicken. KTO advises telling the server which ingredients to exclude, or choosing temple food.
- Halal: KTO’s 2022 guide defines “Muslim friendly” as partly or wholly halal dishes with alcohol allowed, and “pork-free” as no halal menu but no pork. It lists Ildossi Dakgalbi branches (including Gwanghwamun) as Muslim friendly. Ask about halal certification.
7. Dakgalbi Tours and Cooking Classes

Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting an official dakgalbi Seoul price. Chamgagyeok does not track it; use dated menus.
- Arriving alone and assuming one portion is fine. Hongdae Dakgalbi lists a two-portion minimum.
- Ordering “very spicy” first. Start mild or medium and keep some cheese.
- Mixing up sutbul (charcoal-grilled) with iron-plate dakgalbi on a Chuncheon menu.
- Skipping the fried rice, the traditional finish. Order it when the chicken is almost gone.
- Trusting listing hours. Visit Seoul and the restaurant disagree by ten minutes; the operator wins.
- Assuming dakgalbi is halal, vegetarian or gluten-free. Ask.
