Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners: Best Options 2026

Bottom line: the best Korea phone plan for foreigners depends on whether you hold a residence card: before it, use a data eSIM or a tourist prepaid SIM (90 days at most, no Korean identity verification); after it, sign up for a postpaid line with KT, SK Telecom, LG U+ or an MVNO in your own name.

Quick Korea Living Guide

Start here: The Korea Travel Toolkit lists what to sort before and after you land.

Stay in touch: A Korea eSIM from Airalo (unlimited data from $12 for 3 days, as of Oct 2026) works before you have a card.

Register: Postpaid lines need the card, so follow the alien registration card guide first.

Apps and transit: Install the essential Korea apps and pick a card in T-money vs Climate Card.

Most Korea phone plan for foreigners advice is written for tourists and repeats one price list. The fine print matters more once you live here: tourist SIMs cap out at 90 days, cannot do Korean identity verification and refuse Korean-issued cards, while a resident line needs a residence card and at least 90 days left on your visa. Every figure below comes from the carriers’ own pages, checked on 16 October 2026.

Quick answer

  • Before the card: an Airalo data eSIM ($12 for 3 days, $69 for 30 days, unlimited) or a carrier tourist SIM from ₩6,500 a day.
  • Tourist limit: KT and SK Telecom tourist products are for stays of 90 days or less.
  • No identity checks: KT, SK Telecom and LG U+ all say tourist lines cannot do banking or personal authentication.
  • Postpaid needs a card: SK Telecom and KT ask for your residence card; KT also wants 90+ days left on your visa.
  • Prepaid with a passport: valid 90 days on KT; with a residence card it lasts until the card expires.
  • MVNO: mvnohub.kr compares 22 operators and accepts foreign registration numbers.
  • Help lines for any Korea phone plan for foreigners: KT 080-448-0100, SK Telecom 080-252-5011, LG U+ 114.

1. Short-Stay Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners: eSIM and Tourist SIM

An Airalo South Korea eSIM is data only and installs before you fly: unlimited data costs $12 for 3 days, $29 for 7 days, $49 for 15 days and $69 for 30 days (16 October 2026). There is no Korean number, so it cannot receive local texts. For the full traveller comparison see eSIM vs SIM vs pocket WiFi.

The carriers sell visitor SIMs and eSIMs with a 010 number. KT’s price list runs from ₩6,500 for 1 day to ₩18,000 for 3 days, ₩35,000 for 7 days, ₩71,500 for 30 days and ₩143,000 for 90 days, VAT included, with unlimited data slowed to 5 Mbps after 11 GB a day. SK Telecom and LG U+ list the same ₩6,500 LTE day pass. Incoming calls and texts are free, but outgoing calls need a top-up and voice only switches on after an identity check at the airport roaming centre.

What tourist SIMs cannot do

  • Last longer than 90 days. KT caps rental plus extensions at 90 days from activation, and SK Telecom warns that stays of 91 days or more may face restrictions.
  • Pass identity checks. KT: “does not support the personal authentication”. SK Telecom: receiving authentication texts “is not possible”. LG U+: banking and government verification “is not supported”.
  • Take Korean cards. KT and SK Telecom both state that credit or debit cards issued in Korea are not accepted.

2. A Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners Before Your Card Arrives

Registering takes a HiKorea booking and then about two weeks for the card, as explained in the alien registration card guide. Until then your Korea phone plan for foreigners has two sensible choices: keep the eSIM running, or buy a carrier prepaid line on your passport. KT’s Global Shop says prepaid on a passport is valid for 90 days from activation, while prepaid activated with a residence card lasts until the card expires. SK Telecom accepts a passport or residence card for prepaid services.

Each KT customer may hold one prepaid and one postpaid line, so a passport prepaid does not block a postpaid line later. Swapping a physical SIM at the airport is easier with a SIM ejector pin in your pocket. Once the line is active, the Coupang English guide shows what a Korean number unlocks for delivery shopping, and the first-month checklist puts the phone line in order with your other jobs.

3. Postpaid Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners: Documents and Rules

A postpaid line is the long-term answer. SK Telecom lists a residence card (or alien registration card) as the document for general sign-up, and a proxy needs the same card plus their own ID. Its foreigner call centre is 080-252-5011, with English, Chinese and Japanese speakers, and it lists “T world for Foreigners” stores such as Gwanak-gu and Gwangjin-gu with English service.

KT is the most detailed in English. Its Global Shop says you need at least 90 days left on your visa, a residence card, and either auto-debit from a Korean bank account or a Korean credit card; a third party’s account can be registered at a store. Bills can be issued in English. The shop lists Welcome plans for residence card holders from ₩39,000 a month including VAT (₩59,000 for 5 GB), but it labels them promotional, so confirm the current plan and contract discount in store. LG U+ residents can call 114 or 080-851-1004.

4. MVNO Plans: A Cheaper Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners

An MVNO, called an alttul phone in Korean, rents capacity from KT, SK Telecom or LG U+ and sells its own plans. KAIT, the Korea Association for AI and ICT Promotion, runs mvnohub.kr, a comparison site covering 22 MVNOs with no-contract plans. Its plan finder asks who will use the line, and the foreigner choice says residents can apply by verifying their foreigner registration number. The site is in Korean, so use your browser’s translation, and pick the network that covers your area. For a long stay, an MVNO is the main alternative to a carrier postpaid Korea phone plan for foreigners.

5. How to Set Up Your Korea Phone Plan for Foreigners

This is the order that works for most residents setting up a Korea phone plan for foreigners.

  1. Book your registration on HiKorea and collect the card (full guide).
  2. Open or arrange a Korean bank account or card for autopay, since KT lists those as the postpaid payment methods.
  3. Choose KT, SK Telecom, LG U+ or an MVNO, and check the plan, contract length and cancellation rules.
  4. Visit a store (ask for a Global or foreign-language store) with your passport and residence card.
  5. Ask for English bills and switch on identity-linked apps only after the line is active in your own name.
  6. Before you leave Korea, cancel the line in person.

Never lend your phone or line. KT states that using a service under another person’s name is prohibited in Korea and the account holder is always legally liable for it.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Relying on a tourist SIM for banking codes. All three carriers say it will not pass identity verification.
  • Paying a tourist SIM with a Korean card. KT and SK Telecom reject Korean-issued cards.
  • Buying a second tourist SIM for months. The 90-day cap applies to rental plus extensions.
  • Signing without 90 days left on your visa. KT will not subscribe you.
  • Forgetting to cancel. Cancellation must be done in person.
  • Ignoring country locks. Visitor SIMs and eSIMs need an unlocked phone.
