Kakao Bank Foreigners Account: Residents’ Guide (Oct 2026)

October 22, 2026 by Jen

Home - Korea Travel - Plan Your Trip - Kakao Bank Foreigners Account: Residents’ Guide (Oct 2026)

Bottom line: Kakao Bank foreigners can now open an account in the Kakao Bank app, but only residents can: you must be 19 or older, live in Korea, hold a Korea-issued ID such as an Alien Registration Card and have a phone registered in your own name. This guide is for long-stay residents, not tourists.

Quick Korea Living Guide

Start here: The Korea Travel Toolkit lists what to sort before and after you land.

Before you apply: The account needs a Korea-issued ID and a phone in your name, so finish the alien registration card guide and the Korea phone plan guide first.

Settling in: Follow the first-month checklist and the Coupang English guide for delivery shopping.

Only visiting? You cannot open this account on a short stay. See how much cash to bring to Korea and Apple Pay in Korea instead.

On Monday 12 October 2026, Kakao Bank added banking for foreign residents to the same app its Korean customers use. The Korea Herald, Korea Times and JoongAng Daily agree on the basics: account opening, a debit card and overseas remittance, with more services promised for 2027. This guide turns those reports and Kakao Bank’s own foreigner-account page into one checklist, with facts as of October 2026.

Quick answer

  • Launch: Monday 12 October 2026, inside the main Kakao Bank app.
  • Who: foreign residents aged 19 or older with a Korea-issued ID (not a passport) and a phone in their own name.
  • Time: about five minutes when no extra screening is needed.
  • Cost: transfers and ATM withdrawals are free; Hanpass remittances to the US and China are free.
  • Card: Friends debit card with cashback now; a version for overseas payments is planned for early December 2026.
  • Languages: English, Chinese and Vietnamese screens, plus English chat support.
  • Not yet: savings, open banking and loan comparison are planned for 2027.
  • Not for tourists: short-term visitors are not covered yet.

What Is the Kakao Bank Foreigners Account?

Kakao Bank is an internet-only bank, and its foreigner product is called 외국인통장 (foreigner account). The twist is the app. Instead of a separate app for foreign customers, Kakao Bank put Kakao Bank foreigners into the app its 28 million Korean customers already use. Bae Jung-ho, head of its foreign customer camp, told the Korea Times that this is how it launched with more than 50 services at once.

The timing follows demand. Korea’s foreign population reached a record 2.78 million at the end of 2025, per the Ministry of Justice figures quoted by the Korea Times. Toss Bank has offered non-face-to-face opening for foreign residents since 2022, so Kakao Bank is joining a race rather than starting one.

One boundary matters. This is a resident product. Kakao Bank says it aims to reach short-term foreign visitors and overseas Koreans only as a longer-term goal, so a tourist with a passport and an eSIM cannot open it today. Visitors should read how much cash to bring to Korea instead.

1. Who Can Open a Kakao Bank Foreigners Account

Kakao Bank’s foreigner-account page answers this directly. You must be 19 or older, live in Korea and own a phone registered in your own name. For ID it asks for a Korea-issued card with a photo, and it excludes passports. Kakao Bank names the Alien Registration Card, Mobile ID and a Korean driver’s licence as examples, plus your current address in Hangul.

IDKorea-issued ID, passport excluded: Alien Registration Card, Mobile ID or driver’s licence
AddressYour current address, written in Korean
NationalityMore than 200 nationalities, including China and Vietnam

Order matters. Get the card first, then the phone line, then the bank. The alien registration card guide covers the 90-day deadline and the ₩35,000 fee, and the Korea phone plan guide covers the number. A travel eSIM that carries data only does not give you a Korean number. If your ID is a different type of residence card, check the app or call Kakao Bank on 1599-3333 (+82-2-6420-3333 from abroad) before you plan around it.

2. How to Open a Kakao Bank Foreigners Account Step by Step

For Kakao Bank foreigners, sign-up is a chatbot that guides you through each screen. The press reports describe the flow like this:

  1. Install the Kakao Bank app from Google Play or the App Store. Foreign residents use the same app as Korean customers.
  2. Start the foreign resident account sign-up and follow the chatbot.
  3. Verify your identity with your Korea-issued ID and the selfie check built for foreign users. Public MyData fills in your name, nationality and address so you type less.
  4. Enter your address in Korean and answer the screening questions. If Kakao Bank asks for papers such as an employment certificate, pay stubs or a certificate of residence, upload them in the app.
  5. Wait for approval. With no extra review it takes about five minutes; if overseas tax checks or more screening apply, you can follow the progress inside the app.
  6. Apply for the Friends debit card and register for Hanpass remittance from the same app.

There is no branch visit in this flow, and English consultations are available in the app.

3. What Kakao Bank Foreigners Get: Fees, Cards and Remittance

Free transfers and ATM withdrawals

For Kakao Bank foreigners, the official page says transfers to other banks and withdrawals at bank and convenience-store ATMs carry no fee. The Korea Herald’s business edition adds that the waiver has no conditions. You can also send money to a KakaoTalk friend without knowing the account number.

Friends debit card, group account and Safe Box

The Friends debit card gives Kakao Bank foreigners the same cashback as Korean customers, and the page advertises cashback on every purchase with double on weekends. At launch the card works for domestic payments only. The Korea Herald reports that international debit card payments are scheduled for early December 2026, while other outlets say later this year, so check the app before you travel.

The group account (모임통장) for shared expenses and Safe Box, an interest-bearing parking account for spare money, are open to foreign customers too. Kakao Bank also offers a credit card comparison service and the Kakao Bank Chakbut Shinhan Card.

Overseas remittance through Hanpass

Outbound transfers run through Hanpass, a Korean remittance provider, and cover about 200 countries and more than 50 currencies. You register and send without leaving the Kakao Bank app. Fees to major destinations including the United States and China are free, and the Korea Herald says fees are waived for some destinations, so read the fee line for your route before you confirm. Compare the final amount the recipient gets with the service you use today. Kakao Bank handles incoming overseas remittances itself and waives its receiving fee in full.

Tools built for resident life

  • Certificates: issue a balance certificate and transaction statement for visa extensions from a document menu in the app.
  • Balance in nine currencies: your won balance is shown next to a real-time conversion into nine currencies.
  • Government notices: check notices of fines and penalties through the National Secretary service.
  • Security: facial authentication for foreign users, stay-period management and text-scam detection.
  • Language: AI translation of screens, key notifications and chat in English, Chinese and Vietnamese, plus one-on-one English consultations.

4. What Kakao Bank Foreigners Cannot Do Yet

The Kakao Bank foreigners launch is a first stage. Savings and instalment deposits, open banking and loan comparison are planned for 2027, according to the Korea Herald and JoongAng Daily. Kakao Bank’s own loans for foreign residents are a longer-term goal, because Bae said they need a different credit assessment model and infrastructure. Foreign-currency accounts that connect salary deposits, currency exchange and remittance are also on the long-term list.

Foreign minors and short-term visitors are outside the service for now. Safe Box is a parking account, not the 2027 savings range, so compare the alternatives below if you need savings today.

5. Kakao Bank Foreigners Stay-Period Rules: When an Account Is Restricted

This is the part most guides skip. The Maeil Business Newspaper reports that Kakao Bank manages eligibility for foreigners by the stay period printed on your ID, not by whether you are physically in Korea. Leaving the country does not by itself restrict the account, and a valid stay means you can still use it.

  • Stay period expires: app access is blocked first. Existing transfers, ATM withdrawals, card payments and deposits are not all cut off at once, but Kakao Bank watches them with its fraud detection system.
  • Unusual activity: if the system flags odd overseas logins or suspicious transaction patterns, Kakao Bank can restrict every transaction on that account, even with a valid stay.
  • After a visa renewal: verify again in the app with your renewed card and the restriction is lifted once the required steps, such as re-photographing the ID, are done.

So renew early and keep your phone number active. The alien registration card guide explains address changes and re-entry permits.

6. Kakao Bank Foreigners vs Other Foreign-Resident Banking Apps

Kakao Bank foreigners accounts are not the only option, and the press coverage names the main rivals. Pick by language, by the countries you send money to and by whether you need loans or savings.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving as a tourist and expecting an account. Kakao Bank foreigners accounts are for residents with a Korea-issued ID.
  • Using a passport as ID. Kakao Bank’s page excludes passports.
  • Skipping the phone line. The phone must be registered in your own name, so sort the phone plan first.
  • Letting the stay period lapse. Expiry blocks the app until you renew and verify again.
  • Counting on the debit card abroad. At launch it works for domestic payments; overseas payments are planned for early December 2026.
  • Assuming every transfer is free. Hanpass fees are waived for major destinations such as the US and China; check your route.
  • Sharing your login. Unusual access patterns can freeze every transaction on the account.
  • Waiting for savings. Deposit and instalment products are planned for 2027.
