Bottom line: Samgyetang Seoul style means a whole young chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, garlic, jujube and ginseng, served one bowl per person. It averaged ₩18,269 a serving in Seoul in August 2026, and the classic places to eat it are Tosokchon near Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Bib Gourmand pick 3rd Samgyetang in Seocho.

What this guide covers
What Is Samgyetang? The Dish Behind Samgyetang Seoul Menus
The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) describes samgyetang as a young chicken stuffed with sweet (glutinous) rice, garlic, jujube and ginseng, then simmered in water. It says many foreign visitors choose it as one of their favorite Korean foods and calls it a popular summer dish. The name is literal: sam (ginseng), gye (chicken), tang (soup).

Expect a pale broth, a bird small enough for one person, and plenty of small bones. The soup arrives lightly seasoned, so the salt on the table is yours to add. Seoul restaurants also sell richer bowls with abalone, black chicken or wild ginseng, covered below.
1. Samgyetang Seoul and Boknal: When the Queues Form
Boknal are three days in the hottest stretch of summer: chobok, jungbok and malbok. Korea’s official calendar data (월력요항) is announced each year by the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and published with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). In 2026 boknal fell on 15 July, 25 July and 14 August, so this year’s season is over. KASA’s announcement of 29 June 2026 lists 20 July (chobok), 30 July (jungbok) and 9 August (malbok) for 2027.

Eating hot soup on the hottest days is the custom, and famous shops get long lines on those dates, as the photo shows. In summer, go on a non-boknal weekday or away from the lunch peak. Michelin’s note on 3rd Samgyetang also tells diners to arrive early to avoid long lines at peak hours. Samgyetang Seoul restaurants serve it all year, so autumn and winter visits are an easy option.
2. Samgyetang Seoul Variations: Classic, Abalone, Black Chicken
Classic samgyetang

The standard bowl follows KTO’s description, and many photos and menus also show chestnuts and jujubes. Salt and pepper usually sit on the table; Creatrip reviewers mention both at Baekje Samgyetang.
Abalone samgyetang (jeonbok samgyetang)

KTO lists Samyang Samgyetang in Jongno-gu for its abalone ginseng chicken soup. Abalone is shellfish, so skip this version if you have a shellfish allergy.
Ogolgyetang (black chicken)

Ogolgyetang uses a black-skinned silkie chicken. Baekje Samgyetang’s Creatrip menu lists Silky Chicken Soup at ₩25,000 and a wild ginseng silky version at ₩30,000.
Wild ginseng and North Korean style
Wild ginseng samgyetang costs more: ₩24,000 at Baekje Samgyetang against ₩19,000 for the regular bowl (Creatrip menu, checked 13 October 2026). Michelin describes Muguok as serving North Korean-style chicken, steamed in cast-iron gamasot pots and portioned in front of guests, a different style from the stuffed classic.
3. Where to Eat Samgyetang in Seoul
The best-known samgyetang Seoul addresses cluster around Gyeongbokgung Palace and Jongno, with one Bib Gourmand pick south of the river in Seocho. The places below are listed on an official or guide page.
Tosokchon Samgyetang (near Gyeongbokgung)

Visit Seoul lists Tosokchon Samgyetang at 5 Jahamun-ro 5-gil, Jongno-gu, 203 m from Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) Exit 2. It has operated since 1983 in a hanok, opens daily 10:00-22:00 (phone +82-2-737-7444) and provides English, Japanese and Chinese menus. The listing does not mention card payment or waiting times. Pair it with the palace, or see Incheon Airport to Insadong if you stay in Jongno.
3rd Samgyetang (Seocho, Bib Gourmand)

The MICHELIN Guide lists 3rd Samgyetang as a Bib Gourmand at 56-3 Banpo-daero 28-gil, Seocho-gu, open daily 10:45-22:00 (phone +82-2-522-2270). Michelin says it opened in 1973, is in its third generation, and makes a broth of over 40 ingredients topped with mung bean and pine nut purées and mugwort paste, served with glasswort salt. Staying south of the river? See Incheon Airport to Gangnam.
Muguok (Jongno, MICHELIN Guide)
Muguok is new in the MICHELIN Guide (listed, without a Bib Gourmand symbol) at 7 Yulgok-ro 1-gil, Jongno-gu, in a hanok near Gyeongbokgung. Michelin’s hours read 11:00-14:00 and 17:30-20:00 daily, while its review says doors open at 11:30 with a waitlist an hour earlier. The two conflict, so call +82-10-8310-1261 or check Naver Map first.
Samyang Samgyetang (Jongno-gu, KTO)
KTO lists Samyang Samgyetang at 9 Supyo-ro 20-gil, Jongno-gu, open 11:30-22:30 (phone +82-2-2275-9968), known for abalone ginseng chicken soup. KTO does not show closed days, so check before you go.
Baekje Samgyetang (Myeongdong)
Creatrip, a booking platform rather than an official source, lists Baekje Samgyetang at 2F, 8-10 Myeongdong 8-gil, Jung-gu, open daily 09:00-22:00 with English, Chinese and Japanese service, serving samgyetang since 1971. Its menu shows samgyetang at ₩19,000. Staying nearby? Read Incheon Airport to Myeongdong and Myeongdong Is Not Seoul.
4. How to Order and Eat Samgyetang in Seoul
- Order one bowl per person. Chamgagyeok prices samgyetang per single serving, and there is no two-portion minimum like the one many Korean BBQ grills use. Say “samgyetang hana juseyo” (삼계탕 하나 주세요), one samgyetang please.
- Taste first, then season. KTO says to add some salt before eating the soup.
- Take the meat off the bones. KTO says to bone the meat and eat it with a bit of salt; use a spare bowl for bones if one is provided.
- Open the chicken and stir the sticky rice into the broth, as Michelin suggests at 3rd Samgyetang, so it eats like porridge.
- Ask for more kimchi or side dishes. KTO says refills cost nothing extra and tipping is not expected.
- Check the small print on drinks: Baekje’s menu lists ginseng wine at ₩3,000, and it is alcohol.

5. What Samgyetang Seoul Costs
The Korea Consumer Agency’s Chamgagyeok site tracks samgyetang as one of eight restaurant dishes. The latest month on 13 October 2026 was August 2026, and Seoul averaged ₩18,269 per serving (provisional). That is ₩269, or 1.5%, above August 2025’s ₩18,000. Seoul was the highest region in the table (Gyeonggi ₩17,690, Busan ₩17,429, Incheon ₩17,000), and among the eight dishes only samgyeopsal per 200 g (₩21,321) averaged more in Seoul.

The key rules at a glance

| Baekje Samgyetang menu | Samgyetang ₩19,000; wild ginseng ₩24,000; silky chicken ₩25,000 | Creatrip listing (not an official source), checked 13 October 2026 |

| Seoul day tour with Tosokchon lunch | ₩131,250, Sundays, Mandarin guide, 5.0 from 9 reviews | KKday, checked 13 October 2026 |
Chamgagyeok notes that survey shops change over time, so region-to-region comparisons are not exact. Abalone, wild ginseng and black chicken bowls cost more than the average. For a daily budget, see how much cash to bring to Korea.
6. Samgyetang Seoul Dietary Notes: Ginseng, Nuts, Halal
- Not vegetarian or vegan: it is a whole chicken in chicken broth. Samgyetang is not served meat-free, so vegetarians should pick another dish.
- Ginseng: it is the main herb. If you take regular medication, ask your doctor about ginseng before you order. This guide makes no health claims.
- Nuts and seeds: Michelin mentions mung bean and pine nut purées at 3rd Samgyetang, and chestnuts are common, so tell staff about nut allergies.
- Shellfish: abalone samgyetang contains shellfish.
- Halal: KTO sorts Muslim-friendly restaurants into halal certified, self-certified, Muslim friendly and pork free. None of the listings above says halal, so check KTO’s list.
- Alcohol: ginseng wine appears on some menus; say no if you avoid alcohol.
7. Samgyetang Seoul Tours and Classes
No GetYourGuide class or tour is built around samgyetang. One KKday product includes it (as of 13 October 2026):
- KKday Seoul 1-day tour with Tosokchon samgyetang (product 263412): Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, N Seoul Tower, Gwangjang Market and a samgyetang lunch at Tosokchon. Sundays only, 11 hours, hotel pickup in Myeongdong, Dongdaemun or Hongdae, ₩131,250, 5.0 from 9 reviews. Commentary is Mandarin only and it needs 5 travelers to run.

Mistakes to Avoid
- Showing up at a famous samgyetang Seoul shop at lunch on boknal and expecting a short wait.
- Expecting the broth to be seasoned. Add salt yourself, as KTO advises.
- Calling 3rd Samgyetang Michelin-starred. It is a Bib Gourmand, Michelin’s good-value label, not a star.
- Trusting one set of hours. Muguok’s Michelin hours and review disagree, so check first.
- Forgetting allergies: abalone is shellfish, and pine nuts or chestnuts may be in the bowl.
- Booking the KKday tour without reading the language line. It is Mandarin only.
- Assuming every shop has English menus or takes cards. Only Tosokchon’s listing confirms English menus.
