Glasses in Seoul: Walk-In Eye Test, Prices and Where to Go (2026)

Bottom line: buying glasses in Seoul is a walk-in job: a licensed optician (안경사) tests your eyes, you choose frames and lenses, and stocked single-vision lenses can be ready in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. The Korea JoongAng Daily reports about ₩100,000 for a typical complete pair, while strong prescriptions, progressive lenses and designer frames cost more. Details as of October 2026.

If you wear glasses, a Seoul trip can double as an eyewear stop. This guide covers how to buy glasses in Korea as a tourist, what it costs, where to go in Myeongdong, Namdaemun, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seongsu, and which Gentle Monster Seoul stores to visit. Shop details come from the shops’ own pages, VisitKorea and Gentle Monster’s store locator (19 October 2026); price figures carry their source and date.

Quick answer

  • Price: about ₩100,000 for a typical complete pair (Korea JoongAng Daily, December 2025); high-index lenses and designer frames cost more.
  • Where: Namdaemun Market’s eyeglasses street, Davich Myeongdong, Optic Life (Hongdae, Myeongdong, Seongsu, Gangnam) and Look Optical branches.

How to Buy Glasses in Korea as a Tourist

In Korea, the Act on Medical Technicians says only a licensed optician can prepare glasses or open an optical shop. The Korea JoongAng Daily explains that Korean opticians may run the refraction test and also dispense the glasses, so one person can take you from eye test to fitting. That is why a visit to buy glasses in Korea can finish in a single stop instead of the usual two-step test-then-order routine.

One caution: an optician’s refraction test works out which lens power you need. It is not an eye-health examination. If you have eye pain, sudden changes in vision or a known eye condition, see an ophthalmologist (안과) rather than an optical shop.

What to bring when buying glasses in Seoul: your current glasses and any written prescription, a payment card and your physical passport for a tax refund. Most shops take walk-ins; KKday and Klook sell optional Optic Life vouchers, and Creatrip sells Davich and Look Optical vouchers.

1. The Walk-In Process: Eye Test, Frames, Lenses, Fitting

  1. Walk in. VisitKorea describes eye test, frame choice, lens cutting and fitting as one visit overseen by a certified optician.
  2. Eye test. Tourists quoted by the Korea JoongAng Daily describe tests of roughly 5 to 15 minutes; the optician can compare your old prescription with a fresh measurement.
  3. Choose frames and lenses. Ask for the price of the frame and the lens separately, then the total with coatings.
  4. Lens cutting. Korean optical shops usually cut lenses on the premises, and lens wholesalers around Namdaemun help shops there source missing lenses quickly (Korea JoongAng Daily).
  5. Fitting. The optician adjusts nose pads and temples; try the glasses on and walk around before you pay.

Not every pair is quick. VisitKorea says stocked lenses can be ready in as little as 15 minutes and “at most within the same day”; special lenses can take up to two days (Korea JoongAng Daily). If you fly out soon, say so on day one.

2. Glasses in Seoul: Prices, Lenses and Turnaround

Prices for glasses in Seoul vary by shop, so treat every figure below as a reported range and ask for the shop’s own quote. The Korea JoongAng Daily (December 2025) puts a typical pair at around ₩100,000, and VisitKorea says Davich’s Myeongdong branch sells at fixed prices. A KB Securities analyst quoted by the newspaper describes Blue Elephant glasses as being in the ₩50,000 range.

High-index lenses bend light more, so they can be thinner for the same prescription; ask which index (for example 1.60, 1.67 or 1.74) a quote covers. The Optic Life listing on KKday names ZEISS and Nikon lenses, and VisitKorea says Choeun Glasses uses Carl Zeiss equipment for eye tests. Ask which lens brand is in your quote.

4. Gentle Monster Seoul: Flagships and Department-Store Counters

Gentle Monster is a Korean eyewear brand known for design-led stores. Its own store locator (19 October 2026) lists these stand-alone Seoul stores, each with fitting service, simple repair and drop-off repairs. VisitKorea lists the Hongdae flagship as a Tax Refund Shop.

HAUS NOWHERE DOSAN is the flagship in most photos; other brands share the building, so allow extra time. The locator also lists counters in Lotte Department Store Myeongdong (3F, 81 Namdaemun-ro), Shinsegae Myeongdong (1F, 63 Sogong-ro), Hyundai Apgujeong and Galleria Apgujeong, plus a Seoul Lotte Tower store (300 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu). Counters follow each department store’s hours; the locator showed a 20:00 close for most.

Prescription lenses in Gentle Monster frames. The Seoul store pages list fitting, simple repair and drop-off repair; the New Jersey store page lists a separate prescription lens service, which the Seoul pages do not. Ask the store first, or take the frames to an optician that fits lenses into frames bought elsewhere. Gentle Monster’s customer-care page says it services genuine products bought through official stores and authorized dealers, so keep your receipt.

5. Sunglasses, Contact Lenses and Prescription Lenses

Sunglasses vs prescription glasses in Seoul. Plain sunglasses need no eye test. For prescription sunglasses, tell the optician before you choose the frame, because not every frame suits every lens power. Many travellers buy frames at a brand store and fit lenses later; ask what that costs.

Contact lenses. The Medical Technicians Act lets licensed opticians sell contact lenses only in an optical shop and bans e-commerce and mail-order sales, and Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety classifies contact lenses as medical devices. So you buy them in person; the optician must give usage, expiry and side-effect information, so ask your questions then. Bring your lens box or prescription. Voucher listings on Creatrip exclude contact lenses from discounts.

6. Tax Refund, Payment, Shipping and Warranty

  • Tax refund: VisitKorea says purchases over ₩15,000 at Choeun Glasses qualify, but not every optical shop is a Tax Free store, so look for the sign or ask. Immediate refunds apply below ₩1,000,000 per receipt and goods must leave Korea within three months; details are in our Korea tax refund guide. For airport shopping, see our duty free guide.
  • Payment: VisitKorea marks cards as accepted at the Gentle Monster Hongdae flagship and Look Optical Handae, and glasses were 12 percent of retail spending on overseas cards from January 2023 to June 2025 (Korea Credit Data, via the Korea JoongAng Daily). Carry some cash for market shops (how much cash to bring).
  • Language: Davich’s Myeongdong branch has English, Chinese and Japanese pamphlets, and staff said they assist in those languages (Korea JoongAng Daily). Search 안경 (eyeglasses) in Naver Map to find nearby shops.
  • Shipping and warranty for glasses in Seoul: the Optic Life listings on KKday and Klook mention worldwide shipping of finished glasses; confirm terms and cost. Ask each shop about its fitting and repair policy and keep the receipt: Davich says branches nationwide handle repairs, and Gentle Monster stores list simple repair and drop-off repairs. Keep maps and translation working with an Airalo Korea eSIM (from US$4.00, as of Oct 2026).
  • Shopping bags: Radical Storage near Myeongdong Station holds luggage while you shop several areas; see also our Myeongdong luggage storage guide.

What to Ask Before You Pay for Glasses in Seoul

  • Is the price for the frame only, or frame plus lenses?
  • Which lens brand and index are in this quote, and is any coating extra?
  • How long until it is ready, and what if the lens must be ordered?
  • Is there a fee for fitting, later adjustments or shipping abroad?
  • Is this a Tax Free shop, and can I get an itemised receipt?

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving on Sunday at Namdaemun and finding the market closed; plan a weekday or Saturday.
  • Accepting the first quote without asking for frame and lens prices separately.
  • Leaving your glasses in Seoul to the last day: simple lenses are quick, but progressive or unusual prescriptions can take a day or two.
  • Assuming every optical shop offers a tax refund; confirm the Tax Free sign first.
  • Planning to order contact lenses online for delivery in Korea; Korean law restricts online sales.
