Bottom line: WOWPASS is worth it if you want one card for shops and the subway and you carry some cash to exchange: the card costs ₩6,000 (₩5,500 pre-booked), cash top-ups carry no fee, but its exchange rate sat about 1.5% under the market rate on 14 October 2026, and cash withdrawals cost ₩1,000 each.

Most reviews repeat the brand’s slogan, “pay with 0 fees”, and stop there. This WOWPASS review checks the operator’s own pages instead: the card price, the exchange rate it quoted on 14 October 2026, the ₩1,000 withdrawal fee, what happens to a leftover balance, and how it compares with a plain T-money card and the Seoul Climate Card. Every number below is dated October 2026.

Quick answer
- What it is: a prepaid card for foreign visitors, sold by Orange Square, that pays like a Korean debit card and has a T-money transit chip built in.
- Price: ₩6,000 at a machine, ₩5,500 if pre-booked on wowpass.io or the app (October 2026).
- Fees: no fee for cash top-ups in 16 currencies; ₩1,000 per cash withdrawal; ₩3,000 to reissue a lost card; app top-ups may carry a small fee.
- Rate: on 14 October 2026 the site quoted US$1 = ₩1,315.46, about 1.5% below the previous day’s market close.
- Transit: the T-money balance is separate. Top it up with cash at stations and convenience stores, or move card balance into it in the app.
- Won’t work: online and app payments, cash-only stalls, KTX payments over ₩50,000.
- Leaving Korea: withdraw leftover balance in won at a machine (₩1,000 per withdrawal, not at Incheon Airport machines); refund T-money separately for a ₩500 fee.

What this guide covers
What Is WOWPASS? (And Do You Actually Need It?)
WOWPASS is a prepaid card for foreign visitors issued by Orange Square Co., Ltd. You feed foreign cash into a machine, it converts the money to won and loads it on the card, and you then pay by inserting the card’s IC chip into a normal Korean card reader. Its terms say Korea’s Financial Services Commission designated it an “innovative financial service”.
The card also carries a T-money chip, the transit chip used on subways, buses and taxis across Korea. That part has its own balance, which is the single most misunderstood point about the card (section 3).
Do you need one? Not strictly. Korean shops take international Visa and Mastercard almost everywhere, and a T-money card on its own costs less. It makes sense when you bring foreign cash, when your home card charges a foreign transaction fee, or when you want one card for shopping and transit with a live balance in an app. My cash budget guide covers how much won you really need.
1. Where to Get a WOWPASS: Airport, Machines and Pre-Booking
You need your physical passport; the machine scans it. One card is issued per passport (KKday’s product notes). There are three ways to collect it.
- At a machine, on the spot: ₩6,000. The reservation page says there are around 446 self-service machines in hotels, convenience stores, subway stations and tourist spots; the FAQ says “over 400”. Partner listings still say “250+”, which is out of date.
- Pre-booked, then collected at a machine: ₩5,500 online or in the app (8% off); KKday sells a WOWPASS voucher for ₩6,000. You get a code, choose “Issue via Code” at the machine and scan your passport.
- Airport SKT Roaming Center package: ₩29,400 (list ₩33,000) for the card, a T-money balance and a SIM. Compare that with an eSIM before you buy (see eSIM vs SIM vs pocket WiFi).

Getting the Card at Incheon Airport
The official FAQ sends arrivals to the machines inside the CU convenience stores: T1 branch No. 1 and T2 branch No. 3. It also warns that the Incheon Airport machines only take Korean won cash, so foreign-currency exchange and cash withdrawal do not work there. KKday lists store hours of 06:00-23:59 (T1) and 07:00-22:00 (T2); check the app’s machine map before you land.

So land with some won, or pick the card up in Seoul. KKday lists machines at Myeongdong, Hongik Univ., Seoul Station (AREX to Line 4 transfer), Gangnam and Dongdaemun History and Culture Park stations. If you are heading into town first, my Incheon Airport to Myeongdong guide covers the bus and train.

2. WOWPASS Fees and the Real Exchange Rate
The brand says you “pay with 0 fees everywhere”. True for payments and machine cash top-ups, but the money is made on the exchange rate, like any exchange booth.

On 14 October 2026 the widget quoted US$1 = ₩1,315.46. The USD/KRW market close the day before was about ₩1,336 (Investing.com historical data). So the rate was roughly 1.5% below the market rate. On US$500 that is about ₩10,000 less than the market rate: competitive, but not zero. The rate moves during the day; the app and machine show the live one.
The key rules at a glance
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Card (machine) | ₩6,000 | wowpass.io reservation page, Oct 2026 |
| Card (pre-booked) | ₩5,500 | wowpass.io, Oct 2026 |
| Cash top-up at a machine | No fee, 16 currencies | wowpass.io FAQ |
| App top-up (card or PayPal) | “A small fee may apply” | wowpass.io FAQ (no rate published) |
| Cash withdrawal | ₩1,000 each, max ₩100,000 per transaction | wowpass.io |
| Reissue a lost card | ₩3,000 | Service guide (Nov 2025), KKday |
| Send to a Korean bank account | ₩500 | Service guide (Nov 2025) |
| Maximum card balance | ₩1,000,000 | WOWPASS Card Terms, Art. 5 |
| Machine top-up limit | ₩2,000,000 a day, ₩10,000,000 a week | Service guide, KKday |
| T-money refund | ₩500 fee | wowpass.io How to Use |
App top-ups accept Mastercard and JCB, and Visa only through PayPal, per the homepage. The November 2025 service guide capped app top-ups at ₩200,000 per transaction and ₩1,000,000 a month; the current FAQ does not repeat this.

3. Using It: Shops, Transit and the T-money Side
At a shop you insert the chip, as with a Korean debit card. At a subway gate or on a bus you tap it, as with any T-money card. The FAQ says it works in restaurants, cafes, malls, duty-free shops and kiosks anywhere in Korea.

It does not work for online and in-app payments (delivery apps included), at cash-only street stalls and underground arcades, or for KTX payments over ₩50,000, because those need a PIN.
Topping up the T-money balance
The transit chip has its own balance, and money on the card does not reach it automatically. You fill it in one of two ways:
- In the app: hold the card to your phone (NFC) and move card balance into T-money. The guide says this works on iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones.
- With cash: at subway ticket machines or convenience stores, in won, like any T-money card. Physical T-money top-ups are cash only.
That app route is the real advantage: a plain T-money card cannot be funded without won.

4. WOWPASS vs T-money, Climate Card and Your Own Card
Here is WOWPASS vs T-money and the other options. Fares are the same whichever transit card you tap.
| Option | Card cost | Pays in shops | Transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WOWPASS | ₩6,000 (₩5,500 pre-booked) | Yes, insert chip | T-money balance, topped up separately | Exchanging cash, one card for everything |
| Plain T-money card | ₩3,000-5,000 (Tmoney Travel Card ₩4,000) | Convenience stores only | Yes, cash top-ups | Transit only, lowest cost |
| Seoul Climate Card short-term pass | ₩3,000 card plus ₩5,000 (1 day) to ₩20,000 (7 days) | No | Unlimited rides in Seoul | Heavy subway and bus days in Seoul |
| Your own Visa or Mastercard | Free | Yes, nearly everywhere | Not at fare gates (planned 2027) | No cash at all, fee-free card |
| Cash (won) | Exchange spread | Yes | Tops up T-money | Markets and street food |
The Climate Card is a separate Seoul card, so you would carry it alongside a WOWPASS rather than load it onto one; see my Seoul Climate Card guide for what changed in 2026. For the transit-only choice, T-money vs Climate Card does the maths. And note that tapping a foreign Visa or Mastercard at a Seoul fare gate is not possible yet.

With a fee-free bank card, your own card plus a cheap T-money card often wins. The prepaid card wins when you hold foreign cash, want a spending limit, or pay a fee on every swipe.
5. Refunds, Leftover Balance and Lost Cards
There is no refund to your home currency. Leftover card balance comes back only as won cash at a machine: register the card in the app, enter the 8-digit code the machine shows, then withdraw up to ₩100,000 per transaction for ₩1,000 each. Coins and amounts under ₩1,000 cannot be withdrawn, and the Incheon Airport machines do not withdraw at all, so do this in Seoul before your airport day.

The T-money balance is refunded separately, by Tmoney’s rules, for a ₩500 fee. Under ₩20,000 at GS25 or 7-Eleven, under ₩30,000 at CU or Emart24, under ₩50,000 at subway information centres in Seoul, and above that only at Tmoney Town (Seoul Station Exit 10, weekdays 09:00 to 18:00).

If you lose the card, pause it in the app (Settings, Manage Card) and reissue it at a machine for ₩3,000; the card balance carries over, but the T-money balance is lost. Keep the transit balance small for that reason. The FAQ says the card and balance are valid for 6 years, while the WOWPASS Card Terms (Article 10) say five years from the issuing month; check the date printed on your card.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming card balance pays the subway. It does not until you move it into T-money in the app or top up with cash.
- Arriving with only foreign cash. Incheon Airport machines take won only. Exchange a little at the airport or collect the card in Seoul.
- Withdrawing in small amounts, or at the airport. Each withdrawal costs ₩1,000 and airport machines do not withdraw. Empty the card in town.
- Loading too much T-money. A lost card loses its T-money balance for good.
- Trying to buy KTX tickets over ₩50,000 with it. They need a PIN. Use your own card.
- Topping up in the app without checking the fee. The machine cash route is the fee-free one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WOWPASS worth it in 2026?
Yes if you bring foreign cash or your card charges foreign fees: cash top-ups are fee-free and one card covers shops and transit. If you carry no cash and use a fee-free card, a plain T-money card for transit is cheaper.
How much does a WOWPASS cost?
₩6,000 at a machine or ₩5,500 when pre-booked on wowpass.io or in the app, as of October 2026. KKday sells a voucher for ₩6,000.
Is WOWPASS better than T-money?
WOWPASS includes T-money and also pays in shops, so it does more. A plain T-money card costs ₩3,000 to ₩5,000 and is enough if you only need transit.
Can I use WOWPASS on the subway?
Yes. Tap it at the gate like any T-money card, but the T-money balance must be topped up separately, with cash or by moving card balance in the app.
Where can I get a WOWPASS at Incheon Airport?
At the CU store machines, T1 branch No. 1 and T2 branch No. 3. They accept Korean won cash only and do not do cash withdrawals.
Can I get my money back?
Only as won cash at a WOWPASS machine, up to ₩100,000 per withdrawal for ₩1,000 each. The T-money balance is refunded separately for ₩500.
Are there any fees?
No fee for cash top-ups or payments. Withdrawals cost ₩1,000, reissuing a lost card costs ₩3,000, and app top-ups may carry a small fee. The exchange rate also has a spread.
Does WOWPASS work outside Seoul?
Yes. The FAQ says the balance works anywhere in Korea that takes card payments, including Busan and Jeju, and T-money works on transit nationwide.
Is WOWPASS Worth It for a Short Trip?
For three or four days with a fee-free bank card, a ₩4,000 Tmoney Travel Card is enough. For a week or more, a group splitting bills, or cash to exchange, the prepaid card earns its ₩6,000. Next, work out how much cash to bring to Korea and how to claim the Korea tax refund on what you buy with it.
