Bottom line: Gyeongbokgung hanbok free entry is real, but the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center only counts a jeogori (jacket) worn with a skirt or trousers as hanbok, the palace is closed on Tuesdays, and the ₩3,000 ticket is waived only for visitors who pass that check, so rent from a shop near Gyeongbokgung Station and dress to the official guideline.

Most pages on gyeongbokgung hanbok tell you to rent one and walk in free, then stop. The part that decides whether the gate staff wave you through is the official wording of the Free Admission Guidelines for Hanbok Wearers, which changed in 2019 and is under review again in October 2026. This guide quotes that wording, then covers the closed days, rental shops and prices, palace rules, the guard ceremony and a one-day plan.
Quick answer
- Free entry (as of Oct 2026): visitors wearing hanbok enter Gyeongbokgung free; the adult ticket is ₩3,000 (₩2,400 in a group of 10 or more). Foreigners are covered: the Center’s Korean Q&A says nationality does not matter.
- What counts: traditional or modernized hanbok, with both an upper garment (jeogori) and a lower garment (skirt or pants). A durumagi coat alone, a T-shirt-type jeogori, or a jeogori over jeans does not qualify.
- Closed: every Tuesday (if a holiday falls on Tuesday the palace opens and closes the next day). Hours run 09:00 to 17:00, 18:00 or 18:30 by season, with last admission one hour earlier.
- Rental: shops cluster around Exits 3, 3-1 and 4 of Gyeongbokgung Station. Listings start from about ₩10,000 to ₩35,000 for 2 to 4 hours; Creatrip’s Ari Hanbok lists from US$30.03 with hair, bag, shoes and locker included.
- Manners: no drones, no alcohol, tents, mats or cooking gear, no pets, no eating outside designated areas, no smoking, and costume photo shoots with props need permission.
- Guard ceremony: 10:00 and 14:00 for about 20 minutes at Heungnyemun Gate Square, not on Tuesdays and sometimes cancelled in bad weather.
- Rule for gyeongbokgung hanbok: dress to the guideline, keep your passport, and book the shop a few days ahead.

What this guide covers
What Is Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Free Entry and Who Gets It?
For gyeongbokgung hanbok free entry, the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center lists “those wearing a Hanbok” among the groups admitted free to Gyeongbokgung, alongside visitors aged 18 and below, seniors aged 65 and over, and everyone on Culture Day (the last Wednesday of each month). The scheme began in October 2013 and Korean press reported about 2 million free hanbok visitors across the palaces and tombs in 2024. It covers the four palaces, Jongmyo Shrine and the Joseon royal tombs, so one rental can cover a whole palace day.

Tourists are explicitly included in gyeongbokgung hanbok free entry. The Center’s Korean Q&A says the aim is to popularise hanbok worldwide, so Korean and foreign wearers are treated the same. Since 1 July 2019 there is also no rule that men must wear men’s hanbok and women women’s hanbok. Our hanbok rental guide covers shop mistakes; this page covers the rules.
1. What Counts as Hanbok at Gyeongbokgung: The Official Wording
The English guideline for gyeongbokgung hanbok on the Center’s site says: “Both traditional Hanbok and modernized Hanbok are eligible for free admission.” It then sets the basic requirement: “to wear both an upper garment (jeogori) and a lower garment (skirt or pants). Simply wearing an overcoat (durumagi) is not recognized as Hanbok form.” The Center adds that hanbok must be worn properly, for example with the jeogori kept on at all times because revealing hanbok is against public decorum.

The details of the gyeongbokgung hanbok rules are strict: all jeogori ribbon knots (goreum) and buttons should be fastened or tied, a T-shirt-type hanbok is not allowed, and lower garments must cover the legs. Skirts of any type are accepted but must be worn with a separate jeogori. The page also states that partly worn hanbok, such as a jeogori with jeans or a hanbok skirt with a T-shirt, does not qualify, and that the Center reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone dressed inappropriately or who misbehaves.
The key rules at a glance
| Outfit | Counts for free entry? | Official basis |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional or modernized (everyday) hanbok with jeogori and skirt or pants | Yes | Guideline points 1 and 2 |
| Jeogori with a waist skirt (heori chima) | Yes, if the jeogori reaches the waist | Center Q&A (Korean) |
| Jeogori with no ribbon but a wrap-over collar | Yes | Center Q&A (Korean) |
| Summer ramie (mosi) clothing | Yes, if it follows the guideline | Center Q&A (Korean) |
| Durumagi, cheollik or another outer coat on its own | No, a jeogori and skirt or pants must be worn under it | Guideline point 2; Center statement, Aug 2026 |
| T-shirt-type jeogori | No | Guideline point 3 |
| Jeogori with jeans, or hanbok skirt with a T-shirt | No | Guideline footnote |
| One-piece hanbok dress without a separate jeogori | No | Center Q&A (Korean) |
| Revealing hanbok, unfastened jeogori | No | Guideline point 2 note |
Other countries’ traditional dress. The guideline defines hanbok by shape and does not list kimono, hanfu or other national costume, so staff apply the shape rules at the gate. Korean media report that the Center is reviewing the range and wearing standard for hanbok, including the hanfu question, alongside a postponed fee plan (Korea Times, Hankook Ilbo and Edaily, 8 October 2026). Do not count on non-Korean dress for free entry; rent hanbok and you remove the doubt. The Center has also said that fusion hanbok is not restricted across the board, but outfits made only of an outer robe, including the Saja Boys-style gat and robe look from KPop Demon Hunters, need a jeogori and trousers underneath (Chosun Biz, 21 August 2026).
2. Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Day: Hours, Closed Days and the Palace Pass
A gyeongbokgung hanbok day cannot be a Tuesday, because Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays. If a public holiday falls on Tuesday the palace opens and is closed the following day instead. The Center’s rules set Monday as the closed day for Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung, and Tuesday for Gyeongbokgung and Jongmyo, so a Tuesday hanbok day belongs at Changdeokgung or Deoksugung instead. Hours depend on the season, and the ticket office stops selling one hour before closing.

| Item | Gyeongbokgung (official, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Closed | Every Tuesday |
| Hours | 09:00 to 17:00 (Jan, Feb, Nov, Dec); 09:00 to 18:00 (Mar to May, Sep, Oct); 09:00 to 18:30 (Jun to Aug) |
| Last admission | One hour before closing |
| Adult ticket (19 to 64) | ₩3,000; group of 10 or more ₩2,400 |
| Free | Under 19, 65 and over, hanbok wearers, Culture Day (last Wednesday) |
| Royal Palace Pass | ₩10,000 for the 4 palaces and Jongmyo, valid 3 months; Changdeokgung Secret Garden is a separate ticket |
| Free guided tours | English 11:00, 13:30, 15:30 (Wednesday to Monday), about 60 to 90 minutes, from the Information Center inside Heungnyemun Gate |
If you are not wearing hanbok on every palace day, the Royal Palace Pass is the combined ticket for the four palaces and Jongmyo; hanbok wearers do not need it. A fee increase planned for January 2027 has been postponed with no date, according to the Korea Times on 8 October 2026, so ₩3,000 stands for now. Plan palaces around the weather with the best time to visit Korea, and add a night out via Seoul nightlife.
3. Where to Rent a Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Near the Palace
Shops for a gyeongbokgung hanbok rental sit around Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3: Creatrip’s 2026 shop guide places YES, NAYE and Daehan Hanbok at Exit 4, In Korea, Ohnelharu and Ari Hanbok at Exit 3, and Haewadal and Hanbok Girls at Exit 3-1, each a few minutes from the palace gate. Many open at 09:00 or 10:00 and close between 18:00 and 20:00, and several close on Tuesdays like the palace. A rental usually covers 2 to 4 hours, some shops sell 6 hours or a full day, and hair styling, a bag, shoes, an underskirt and a locker are often included.

4. Palace Manners: What Staff Ask Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Visitors Not to Do
The Center’s viewing rules let the palace manager refuse entry, hold your belongings or stop your visit in these cases: carrying flammable items or weapons; alcohol, tents, mats, shade shelters or cooking gear; pets (assistance dogs are the exception); sports or play equipment, musical instruments, loudspeakers or any object that may disturb other visitors or the heritage; drinking, loud singing, religious gatherings, shamanic acts, private rites or other improper behaviour; ignoring a staff warning; or eating packed meals outside the designated zones. Smoking is banned across the grounds.
- Photography: ordinary visitor photos are permitted. Shoots in character costume, mascot suits or props need permission, because they can disturb others or harm the historic setting, and managers may restrict photography in crowded zones.
- Drones: aerial filming is permitted only for public bodies on public-interest grounds, or when the director approves it, so leave a drone at the hotel.
- Tripods and selfie sticks: the palace rules do not name them, but any item that blocks other visitors can be restricted at the gate. Commercial shoots need a permit and a fee.
- Food: eat only in the designated areas and keep drinks and snacks in your bag.
- Behaviour: keep your jeogori fastened, keep your voice down and follow staff instructions; breaching the rules can end your visit.
The same manners apply to every gyeongbokgung hanbok photo group and guided group. For rules on other shared spaces, see Seoul subway etiquette.
5. The Royal Guard Changing Ceremony at Gyeongbokgung

The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation schedules the Royal Palace Guard Changing Ceremony at 10:00 and 14:00 for about 20 minutes at Heungnyemun Gate Square. The Gwanghwamun guard duty performance runs at 11:00 and 13:00 for 10 minutes, and public guard training at 09:35 and 13:35 for 15 minutes. Events run year-round except on the palace’s closed days (Tuesdays) and may be cancelled in heavy rain, heat, extreme cold or fine dust. A guard patrol parade runs at 15:00 to 16:00 on weekends and holidays from March to May and September to November, inside the palace on Saturdays and from Gwanghwamun to Insadong on Sundays. A gyeongbokgung hanbok outfit makes the ceremony photos stand out; Insadong is the natural next stop.
6. Plan Your Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Day and Where to Stay

A simple gyeongbokgung hanbok day: arrive at your shop at opening, return the hanbok before closing, and walk the palace in between. Start with the 10:00 guard ceremony, enter the palace free, see Geunjeongjeon, Gyeonghoeru and the garden, then walk to Bukchon Hanok Village and Insadong. The 7-day Korea itinerary fits Gyeongbokgung into day one, and KPop Demon Hunters Seoul locations lists the palace and museum spots fans visit. Day trip fans can also try hanbok in Jeonju: see Jeonju Hanok Village.
Mistakes to Avoid With Gyeongbokgung Hanbok
- Planning the gyeongbokgung hanbok day on a Tuesday; Gyeongbokgung is closed and many shops close with it.
- Wearing a dress-style hanbok with no separate jeogori, or a jeogori over jeans; neither counts.
- Arriving in a durumagi or a fusion robe without a jeogori and trousers underneath.
- Assuming a kimono or hanfu will do; the guideline is written for hanbok and the rules are under review.
- Paying for the ticket by habit; if you are in valid hanbok, tell the gate staff and show the outfit.
- Booking a 2-hour rental for a full palace and Bukchon day; late returns add fees.
- Bringing a drone, tent, mat or alcohol into the palace.
- Skipping the layer under thin rental tops; they can be see-through, and winter palaces are cold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gyeongbokgung free if you wear a hanbok?
Yes. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center lists visitors wearing hanbok among those admitted free. The adult ticket is ₩3,000, so a rental covers its own cost for most people.
What counts as hanbok for free entry at Gyeongbokgung?
Traditional or modernized hanbok worn with both a jeogori and a skirt or pants. A coat alone, a T-shirt-type jeogori, a jeogori with jeans and a one-piece dress without a separate jeogori do not count.
Can foreigners enter Gyeongbokgung free in hanbok?
Yes. The Center says free entry for hanbok wearers aims to popularise hanbok worldwide, so Korean and foreign visitors are treated the same.
Is a kimono or hanfu accepted for free entry?
The guideline defines hanbok by shape and does not list other countries’ dress, and Korean media report the rules are under review in October 2026. Rent hanbok to avoid being turned away.
Which day is Gyeongbokgung closed?
Tuesdays. If a public holiday falls on Tuesday the palace opens and closes the following day. Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung close on Mondays.
How many hours should I rent a hanbok for?
Plan 2 to 4 hours for the palace alone. Shops sell 2, 4 and 6 hours or a full day, and adding Bukchon and Insadong needs 4 hours or more.
What time is the changing of the guard at Gyeongbokgung?
The guard changing ceremony is at 10:00 and 14:00 for about 20 minutes at Heungnyemun Gate Square, with guard duty at 11:00 and 13:00. It does not run on Tuesdays and may be cancelled in bad weather.
Can I fly a drone or bring food into Gyeongbokgung?
No drone: aerial filming is limited to public bodies or approved cases. Eat only in designated areas, and alcohol, tents, mats and cooking gear can be refused at the gate.
Where Should You Stay After a Hanbok Day at Gyeongbokgung?
Insadong and Jongno put you a short ride from the palace and from the shops. Where to stay in Seoul compares the areas, Incheon Airport to Insadong covers the transfer, and our hotel page for N285 Hotel Insadong has the full review.
