What Is Suwon Hwaseong, and Why Visit It on a Day Trip?

Suwon Hwaseong is an 18th-century fortress city wall built between 1794 and 1796 for King Jeongjo, and UNESCO inscribed it on 12 December 1997. The wall runs about 5.7 km around the old centre of Suwon, with gates, watchtowers and the royal Hwaseong Haenggung palace inside. The Haenggung was restored and reopened in 2003. Suwon Hwaseong works as a day trip because it is close, cheap and easy to do on foot.

The free Muye 24-gi martial arts show

The Muye 24-gi show is a free performance of Joseon-era martial arts in front of Sinpungnu, and Haenggung entry is separate. It runs Tuesday to Sunday: 11:00 on weekdays and holidays, and 11:00 and 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. There is no show on Mondays and weather can suspend it, so arrive 15 minutes early for a front-row spot.

3. Walking the Fortress Wall: Gates and Route

The wall has four main gates: Janganmun in the north, Paldalmun in the south, Hwaseomun in the west and Changnyongmun in the east. A relaxed loop starts at Haenggung, climbs the Paldalsan side to the western command post, and returns via Janganmun and Hwahongmun. Banghwasuryujeong, the pavilion beside the lotus pond, is the best photo stop. The full wall is about 5.7 km, so plan roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, and shorten it by skipping the Paldalsan climb. Walking the wall is free, and the official viewing hours are 09:00 to 18:00.

  • Archery: traditional Korean archery costs ₩3,000 for a 10-round session.
  • Footwear: the Paldalsan section is steep and uneven, so wear trainers.
