Bottom line: a Seoraksan day trip from Seoul works two ways: a guided bus tour listed from about US$44 to US$64, or the DIY route of a Seoul-Sokcho express bus (₩17,200 to ₩28,900), local bus 7 or 7-1 and the ₩16,000 cable car. Leave before 07:00 either way, because the round trip is about 4.5 hours on the bus alone.

Seoraksan National Park, in Gangwon Province on the East Sea, is Korea’s most photographed mountain: the Korea National Park Service (KNPS) says it became the country’s fifth national park in 1970 and a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1982, and it covers 400 square kilometers across Inje, Goseong, Yangyang and Sokcho. The park’s main peak is Daecheongbong. This guide to a Seoraksan day trip from Seoul compares buses and tours, explains the Ulsanbawi hike and the cable car, and covers autumn foliage, KNPS rules and where to sleep in Sokcho. For city mountains first, see our hiking in Seoul guide.

What this guide covers
What Is a Seoraksan Day Trip, and Is It Worth the Long Day?
A Seoraksan day trip means leaving Seoul at about 06:00 to 07:30, spending three to six hours in the park, and returning by evening. Tours advertise 11 to 14 hours door to door, and the KKday Seoraksan and Naksansa listing runs 13 hours. It is worth it for granite walls, the Ulsanbawi hike and the cable car, but a night in Sokcho gives you twice the park time (see section 6).

1. Bus, Tour or Overnight: Which Seoraksan Day Trip Option Fits You?
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided bus tour | About US$44-72 (Klook), from about $63 (GetYourGuide) | 11-14 hours, pickup on many listings | Anyone who wants no logistics; foliage season |
| DIY express bus plus local bus | About ₩34,400-57,800 round trip, plus ₩3,060 local bus and ₩16,000 cable car | About 2 h 10 min to 2 h 35 min each way plus 30 min local bus | Independent hikers who want more park time |
| Guided hiking tour | From about US$60-61 (KKday, GetYourGuide) | 7.5-14 hours; meet at the park or ride the shuttle | Ulsanbawi and Biryong Falls with a guide |
| Overnight in Sokcho | Hotel from Agoda plus the bus | 2 days | Daecheongbong, early starts, a slower pace |
Tour prices change daily and cable car tickets are often extra, so read each listing’s included and excluded list.

2. DIY by Bus: Seoul to Sokcho to Seoraksan
Both Seoul terminals serve Sokcho, according to VisitKorea. From Gangnam, take the subway to Seoul Express Bus Terminal and board a KOBUS bus to Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. From eastern Seoul, go to Dong Seoul Terminal (Gangbyeon Station, Line 2) and take an intercity bus to Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal. A Klook sample shows a 06:00 departure arriving at 08:20 and tickets from US$14.05, so you can buy with the Klook Seoul to Sokcho bus booking before you go.
- Express bus fares (checked June 2026): ₩17,200 standard, ₩22,300 deluxe, ₩28,900 premium from Seoul Express; Dong Seoul runs from ₩16,400 to ₩26,800. Late-night buses cost more.
- Local bus: from either Sokcho terminal, bus 7 or 7-1 runs to Seoraksan Sogongwon in about 30 minutes (₩1,530 by card or ₩1,700 cash); search 설악산소공원 in Naver Map.
- Return: buy your Seoul ticket as soon as you arrive in Sokcho, because evening buses fill in foliage season.
- Tight on time? A taxi from Sokcho saves time, and Kakao T works in the city.

3. Ulsanbawi, Daecheongbong and the Cable Car
Ulsanbawi: the classic Seoraksan day hike
The Ulsanbawi course runs from the Sogongwon entrance via Sinheungsa Temple and Heundeulbawi (the Rocking Rock) to the granite wall, about 3.8 km one way and about 2 hours up. The last stretch is steep steel steps, and the summit looks to the East Sea, Sokcho and Daecheongbong. A GetYourGuide traveler wrote that the round trip took 2 hours 40 minutes and was tight, so on a bus tour with about 3 hours of free time pick one hike. The KKday Ulsanbawi hiking day tour adds Biryong Falls and a guide, and GetYourGuide has a similar guided hike from about $61.

The Seorak Cable Car to Gwongeumseong
The cable car runs 1,128 m in about 5 minutes and arrives at 699 m above sea level at Gwongeumseong, where the old fortress ruins look over the rock ridge, Ulsanbawi and Sokcho. The operator lists ₩16,000 for adults (middle school and up) and ₩12,000 for children aged 37 months to elementary school; under 36 months ride free. Tickets are round trip only and sold on site on the day, with no advance booking, and cabins have no heating or cooling. If strong wind stops service, unused tickets are fully refunded, and a full refund is available until 10 minutes before boarding. Check the live status and the park webcam on the operator’s site before you queue.

Daecheongbong: a summit for an overnight plan
Daecheongbong (1,708 m) is Seoraksan’s highest peak and the target for strong hikers. KNPS lists the Osaek route at 5 km and the Baekdamsa route at 12.5 km, and the Biseondae to Huiungak shelter section at 5.5 km. These are full-day efforts that most day-trip buses cannot fit, so stay in Sokcho or at Osaek and start early. Some shelters and routes require KNPS reservations (the reservation system is at reservation.knps.or.kr), and high trails close in spring and autumn.

4. Autumn Foliage: When to Go to Seoraksan
Color moves from the peaks down to the valley floor. A GetYourGuide foliage-only tour is listed for 12 to 31 October, and a Klook traveler on 12 October 2026 reported about 25% color, so the valley and Sinheungsa area peak later in October. Weekends are crowded; weekdays make the cable car and trail queues shorter. Klook also sells a Seoraksan autumn foliage day tour (4.5 rating from 229 reviews, from US$71.85 as of October 2026). For other dates see the best time to visit Korea.
5. KNPS Rules, Closures and Fines
- Check closures first: KNPS publishes a real-time control page; in spring 2026 the Seoraksan office closed high trails from 4 March to 15 May, while lower sections such as Ulsanbawi, the Towangseong Falls viewpoint and Jujeongol stayed open.
- Autumn fire season: high trails have closed from around 15 November in recent years, so late-November trips may be limited to low trails.
- Fines: entering a closed trail can cost up to ₩500,000, and smoking or carrying flammables up to ₩2 million, according to the Seoraksan office.
- Contact: the Seoraksan National Park Office is at 033-801-0900.
- Basics: stay on trails, take your rubbish out, and call 119 in an emergency (see Korea emergency numbers).

6. Where to Stay in Sokcho: Overnight Hotels via Agoda
Staying over lets you take the first cable car, hike without a bus deadline and add Naksansa Temple and Sokcho Beach. The three hotels below are popular with Agoda guests; rates move daily, so check the live price. The KensingtonHotel Seorak is nearest the park, the Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano suits families with its on-site waterpark, and the Lotte Resort Sokcho is near the express bus terminal.

Mistakes to Avoid on a Seoraksan Day Trip
- Leaving Seoul after 08:00 and arriving with too little park time.
- Planning both Ulsanbawi and the cable car in a 3-hour tour window.
- Assuming the cable car is bookable ahead: tickets are sold on site and wind can stop service.
- Going without checking the KNPS closure page, especially in March-May and from mid-November.
- Forgetting to buy the return bus to Seoul on arrival.
- Visiting on a foliage weekend without booking the bus or tour ahead.
- Wearing sneakers on the steel stairs; use grippy shoes and gloves in cold months.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Seoraksan from Seoul?
Seoraksan is about 190 km from Seoul. Express buses to Sokcho take about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes, then local bus 7 or 7-1 takes about 30 minutes to the park entrance.
Is a Seoraksan day trip from Seoul worth it?
Yes if you start early. Tours run 11 to 14 hours, leaving three to six hours in the park, enough for the cable car or one hike such as Ulsanbawi. Stay overnight in Sokcho if you want Daecheongbong.
How much is the Seoraksan cable car?
The operator lists ₩16,000 for adults and ₩12,000 for children aged 37 months to elementary school, round trip only. Tickets are sold on the day at the ticket office and service can stop in strong wind.
How long does the Ulsanbawi hike take?
Plan about 2 hours one way (3.8 km) and 4 to 5 hours round trip including a break. The final section is steep steel steps.
When is the Seoraksan autumn foliage peak?
Color starts on the peaks in early October and reaches the valley around the last third of the month. A Klook traveler reported about 25% color on 12 October 2026, so late October is safer for valley views.
Is there a train from Seoul to Seoraksan?
No direct train serves Sokcho in 2026. Use the express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Terminal, or join a tour.
Can I climb Daecheongbong as a day trip?
It is not realistic on a standard tour. Daecheongbong (1,708 m) takes a full day from Osaek or Baekdamsa, and high trails close for fire prevention in spring and from around mid-November.
What is the best way to book a Seoraksan tour?
Pick a listing with English guiding, free cancellation and a clear cable car policy. Klook, GetYourGuide and KKday all list Seoraksan day trips from about US$44 to US$72.
