Korea autumn foliage moves from north to south and from the summits down, so the best plan depends on the date you land. This guide gives the 2026 forecast peak dates, what the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reports today and where to go: Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Nami Island and the Seoul palaces. For the month view, see Korea in November and the best time to visit Korea.

What this guide covers
Korea autumn foliage 2026: Official Forecast Dates
Two official bodies publish dates for Korea autumn foliage, and they measure different things. The Korea Forest Service (KFS) released its 2026 peak map on 22 September and calls a peak when at least 50% of observed trees have changed color. The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) English page, credited to the private forecaster Weatheri, lists later dates. KMA publishes observations only: first color at about 20% of a mountain and peak at about 80%.
Peak dates at a glance
| Mountain | KFS forecast peak | KTO forecast peak | KMA status, 22 Oct |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoraksan | 20 Oct | 25 Oct | Peak (reported 16 Oct) |
| Bukhansan (Seoul) | – | 4 Nov | First color |
| Songnisan | 28 Oct | 4 Nov | First color |
| Jirisan | 27 Oct | 5 Nov | First color |
| Naejangsan | 4 Nov | 11 Nov | Not turned yet |
| Hallasan | 6 Nov (1100 Road) | 13 Nov | First color |
A dash means no date is given. KFS national averages: 30 October for ginkgo, 31 October for maple and oak.

Which source to trust
Use the KFS dates as the government forecast and the KMA page as ground truth. KTO’s Seoraksan date of 25 October came after KMA had already recorded the peak on 16 October, so read KTO’s southern dates as a late scenario. The Naejangsan park office expects about 7 to 8 November, between the two forecasts.
1. Where Korea autumn foliage Stands Today

- Peak: Seoraksan, Odaesan, Chiaksan and Deogyusan.
- First color: Bukhansan, Sobaeksan, Songnisan, Jirisan, Gyeryongsan, Palgongsan and Hallasan, among others.
- Not turned yet: Naejangsan, Duryunsan, Wolchulsan and Jogyesan.
The KMA famous-mountain foliage page is in Korean, but the map symbols are enough to read. Check it a day or two before you travel.
2. Where to Go for Korea autumn foliage by Date
| Window | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Now to 28 Oct | Seoraksan lower trails and the Osaek side, central mountains such as Chiaksan | KMA shows both at peak; tours use the Osaek course until 4 Nov |
| 29 Oct to 4 Nov | Seoul ginkgo streets and palaces, Nami Island, Bukhansan, Jirisan | KFS national peak 30 to 31 Oct; KTO Bukhansan 4 Nov; Nami Island from late Oct |
| 4 to 13 Nov | Naejangsan, Hallasan | KFS Naejangsan 4 Nov, park office 7 to 8 Nov, KTO 11 Nov; Hallasan 6 to 13 Nov |
Nami Island is the easiest day trip from Seoul; Naejangsan is a long day, so many visitors book a tour. Still choosing a base? See where to stay in Seoul.
3. Seoraksan in Late October: Past Peak, Still Busy
KMA recorded Seoraksan’s peak on 16 October, ahead of the KFS date (20 October) and the KTO date (25 October). Color starts at the summits and moves down, which is why operators are sending groups through the Osaek course until 4 November. A guided option for Korea autumn foliage is the Seoraksan autumn foliage tour on KKday, listed at 11 hours with English and Mandarin guiding.

Sokcho runs special traffic control on weekends and holidays until 8 November, with free outer car parks and shuttle buses. The Heullimgol trail is reservation-only in October and November: 5,000 people a day, one way over 3.1 km, with bookings closing at 14:00 the day before. For buses, the cable car and hikes, see our Seoraksan day trip guide.
4. Naejangsan: The Best Late Korea Autumn Foliage Spot
Naejangsan National Park in Jeongeup, Jeonbuk, is known for a maple-lined path to Naejangsa Temple and a pavilion on a pond. The KFS forecast peak is 4 November, KTO says 11 November and the park office expects color from about 29 October with a peak around 7 to 8 November. KMA lists it as not turned yet, so the first or second week of November is the safer bet.

Jeongeup runs crowd management from 26 October to 22 November, most intensively from 31 October to 15 November, and expects about 350,000 visitors this season. Park roads are closed to cars in foliage season, so come by public transport: a KTX from Yongsan to Jeongeup Station takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, then city bus 171 takes about 30 minutes. Book early; see what to do when KTX is sold out.
The Seoraebong to Byeongnyeonam section is reservation-only in October and November at 520 people a day, and entering a restricted trail without a booking can bring a fine of ₩200,000 for a first offence. The Naejangsan day tour on KKday handles transport if you would rather not plan it.

5. Nami Island and Gapyeong: The Easy Day Trip
Nami Island’s operator says the island is most beautiful from late October to mid-November, with the ginkgo lane turning slightly after the maples and for a short time. Adult admission is ₩19,000 and already includes the round-trip ferry; see our Nami Island and Petite France guide for trains and fees. KTO also lists Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm among its Seoul-area foliage spots.

The GetYourGuide Nami Island and Garden of Morning Calm tour includes the ferry, entry tickets and pickup at Hongik University, Myeongdong or Dongdaemun. If you also want Seoraksan in one long day, the Mt. Seorak, Nami Island and Garden of Morning Calm tour visits the Osaek course during the foliage season; the cable car ticket is not included.

6. Seoul: Palaces and Parks for Korea autumn foliage
Seoul turns later than the mountains, from late October into early or mid-November, and its palaces are the classic setting for ginkgo and maple. In early November 2025, Seoul city reporters found ginkgo and maple color at Gyeongbokgung (near Geonchunmun and Jagyeongjeon), Changdeokgung (the ginkgo beside the Chaekgo archive), Changgyeonggung’s Chundangji pond, Deoksugung’s Junmyeongdang hall and Jeongdong-gil lane.

| Palace | Closed | Entry | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyeongbokgung | Tuesdays | ₩3,000 for adults; free in a full hanbok | Open 09:00 to 18:00 in October, 09:00 to 17:00 from November; English tours at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:30 |
| Changdeokgung | Mondays | ₩3,000 palace ticket; Secret Garden ₩5,000 extra | Secret Garden is guided only: 100 people per session, English at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30 |
The Secret Garden needs its own reservation on the Korea Heritage Service system, and sessions fill fast in foliage season. For hanbok rules and rentals, see the Gyeongbokgung hanbok rules and hanbok rental in Seoul.

Bukhansan and city walks
KMA recorded Bukhansan’s first color on 14 October and its normal peak is 28 October; KTO forecasts 4 November. For trails and rules, see Bukhansan hiking and hiking in Seoul.

Mistakes to Avoid on a Korea autumn foliage Trip
- Planning Korea autumn foliage around one forecast date instead of checking the KMA status page a day or two before.
- Going on a foliage weekend without booking buses or tours; Sokcho and Jeongeup both restrict traffic.
- Entering Heullimgol or Seoraebong without a reservation, which can bring a ₩200,000 fine.
- Arriving at Gyeongbokgung on a Tuesday or Changdeokgung on a Monday, when each is closed.
- Assuming the palace ticket includes the Changdeokgung Secret Garden; it is a separate reserved session.

Do I need a reservation for foliage hikes in Korea?
For some trails, yes. Seoraksan’s Heullimgol trail and Naejangsan’s Seoraebong to Byeongnyeonam section are reservation-only in October and November, and bookings close at 14:00 the day before on the national park reservation site.
